The Third Time's Not Always The Charm
By Ed Schuyler
A third fight between boxers signals that their first two bouts produced an exciting victory for each man and that the rubber match is saleable. This is the case for Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales, as it was for Morales vs. Marco Antonio Barrera.
Morales won the first fight against Barrera, then lost the next two. Against Pacquiao, Morales won a decision, then he was stopped in the 10th round. Because of their styles, Saturday night’s fight at Las Vegas should be another thriller, but it ain’t necessarily so that a rubber match lives up to expectations.
Muhammad Ali’s 14th round victory over Joe Frazier in Manila in 1975 was to my mind the greatest rubber match in the history of boxing, but his third fight against Ken Norton in1976 was a rather dull affair, which is remembered more for the acts of hooliganism in Yankee Stadium that were encouraged by the New York police being on strike.
Frazier had kept the heavyweight title on a unanimous decision in a fight in which he knocked Ali down in the 15th round in 1971 at Madison Square Garden. Neither man was champion when Ali scored a 12-round decision in the Garden three years later. He then became champion again by knocking out George Foreman in 1974 in Africa.
In the Thrilla’ in Manila, the two arch-rivals fought with a ferocity that even left onlookers drained. The fight ended when trainer Eddie Futch would not permit Frazier to go out for the 15th round because Smokin’ Joe could barly see. Futch took his action despite the fact that he thought Frazier was winning. If the fight had gone the distance, however, Ali would have won a unanimous decision.
“You may have seen the last of Ali,” the champion said. “I want to get out of it.” It would have been the perfect time for both him and Frazier to retire.
A third Ali-Norton fight was highly anticipated. In 1973, Norton had broken Ali’s jaw in winning a 12-round split decision. Then Ali needed to win the 12th round for a split-decision victory in the rematch. While some among the 30,298 fans in Yankee Stadium were being mugged, Ali won a close but controversial unanimous decision mainly on the strength of dominating the final three rounds.
While the third Ali-Norton bout was marred by violence outside the ring, the third Emile Griffith-Benny “Kid” Paret match will always be remembered for violence inside the ropes.
At the weigh-in for the fight at Madison Square Garden on March 24, 1962, Paret, the defending welterweight champion, made some remarks about Griffith’s sexual orientation and touched him on his bare back. That night, Griffith, who was far ahead in the scoring, pinned Paret in a neutral corner and landed about 25 hard punches before referee Ruby Goldstein intervened. Paret slumped to canvas and did not regain consciousness. He died nine days later.
Two rubber matches that will always be overshadowed by the second fights were Floyd Patterson against Ingemar Johansson and Riddick Bowe against Evander Holyfield.
The last Patterson-Johnansson fight in 1960 at Miami Beach, Fla., probably was the best of the three, with Patterson being knocked down twice and the Swede once in the first round before Patterson scored a sixth-round knockout. Mention Patterson-Johansson, however, and the first fight that pops into mind is the second one in which Patterson became the first man to regain the heavyweight championship when he knocked out Johansson in the fifth round at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Johansson had won the title a year earlier by knocking down Patterson seven times in the third round and stopping him.
Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe could have fought 10 times, and their second would still be the one most remembered. In the seventh round of that fight in 1993, Fan Man crashed into the ring ropes, causing a 21-minute delay. Holyfield would regain the undisputed heavyweight title on a 12-round majority decision. The two men would be former champions when Bowe won the rubber match on an eighth-round technical knockout in 1995.
A rubber match that was an afterthought was Sugar Ray Leonard’s one-sided decision over Roberto Duran for the WBC super middleweight title in 1989, nine years after one of the most controversial fights in history. In 1980, Leonard regained the WBC welterweight title from Duran when the Panamanian quit in the eighth round. It was the “No Mas” fight.
Action was packed into almost three rounds of the rubber match between Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano, but still the bout paled in comparison to the first two fights, which were as intense as any two bouts in boxing history. Zale took a beating before knocking out Graziano in the sixth and retaining the middleweight title in 1946. Graziano took an even a worse drubbing before rallying to top Zale in the sixth round and win the championship in 1947.
In their third match at Newark, N.J., in 1948, the 26-year-old Graziano, nine years younger than Zale, was a 12-5 favorite, but Zale was in charge from the outset as he become only the second man to regain the middleweight title, joining Stanley Ketchel, who did it with an eighth-round knockout of Billy Papke in 1908. Zale knocked down Graziano in the first round and knocked him down again in the third before knocking him out.

I'm glad you've brought this up, because it's very true! 3rd fights are often let downs, and even rematches can be (ask anyone who bought barrera/juarez II if you're so soon to forget). I'd rather see a boring win for Morales cause I'd like to see him box how he can and should be doing, but that's just me. I doubt that will happen. As it's been said before "Erik could get in a fight with a trash man and make a war out of it."

Not for PACQUIAO vs. MORALES rubber-match, i really think pacman is a different fighter...there won't be any dull moments when pacman is in the Ring...as you may remember as well JMM is not that attractive to watch when fighting he always go for a counter and box often, but not when he is in front of pacman. Manny has the atrocious fighting style that is good for boxing, thats why he is recognze as the most exciting boxer today. He can dictate the pace of the fight to expand and contract easily as what manny what to do... very courageous young man...

The third and final encounter between Manny and Erik will be exciting up to the third round. The fourth round will be a bloody mess for Morales. I see him ending up in the hospital(god forbids). There is a "praying lady" in Manny's arsinal that would make Manny invincible in this fight. You heard it first on this site !!!!!!!!

im a filipino and i adore very much how my countryman, Manny the "PACMAN" Pacquiao fight for the Filipinos and i'm very proud of him. But i'm also a big Morales fan because i really like his style in boxing and most especially hi determination and guts of facing boxers who are really great no matter how good they because he believe in his self too well, right? Only Morales that we can consider a warrior that a big heart because he is not afraid to box anyone on his way. Just like Manny Pacquiao who also faced all great boxer in his career. So this PACQUIAO-MORALES trilogy could be the most exciting match ever because the two boxers have all the heart of a champion carrying on when they step into the ring. For me this is a test for both boxers to prove theirselves on how they can go and fight for the pride of their country and for their careers.

I trained to entertain to the fullest extent of domination and explosiveness that when you watch my fights, you could feel the power I throw in your own face or body. I'm oughta here, moms gonna whack me with broomstick and that I cant tolerate. Morales, you're going down!

I don't think it is an exciting fight anymore...Morales is past his prime and considering the weight issue that he has to hurdle, it will be next to impossible for Morales to pull it through. His best chance is on the first 4 rounds and if he can not knock Pac out, it is over. And if I were Manny, I would circle the wagon for the first 4 rounds and wait for the 5th round to start the onslaught. This is my take...It would have been a different scenario if this fight were 2 or 3 years ago where Erik was a superb fighter...

"Manny the "PACMAN" Pacquiao fight for the Filipinos and i'm very proud of him."
I disagree on the part where PACMAN "fight for the Filipinos". I think that idea was only brought about by media or his exposure (or in worst case, to gain Filipinos' amor) I believe that the "being a hero" thing is not the objective of Pacquio when he initially entered the boxing world. It (maybe) just turned out that since he is in the limelight now, the idea of the being "people's hero" just came in.
Scenarios are sensationalize that it came to a point that the "real" definition of a "hero" is being jeopardize.
Thanks.

The above observation is definitely inapplicable to the Pacquia-Morales case because even though both fighters will have their won strategy, they will not be fighting a dull tactical fight but will definitely slug it out at most times.

It will be boring only if Morales runs away in the ring which Manny thinks Morales will do to last 12 rounds. Conversely, Manny thinks Morales will try to finish him off in the first few rounds because Morales knows that he will run out of gas if the fight goes the distance. One thing is for sure: Manny will be throwing punches from start to finish. Exciting, right?

Pacman will win this fight definitely. He only has to stick to his battle plan, and not be overconfident. He has superior speed, power and stamina. He is younger and stronger. His build is ideal for this weight division. He should not go for an early knockout unless a great opportunity comes his way. He has to tire his opponent first, then in the second half of the bout go for the kill in rounds 8 to 10. Above, all, his fans should not stop praying for his victory until the bout is over.

Mara Barrera:

My uncle Marco Antonio Barrera once thought he could school Pacquiao exactly the way he thought he would to Juarez in their rematch, what my uncle did not expect was that he was fighting a flyweight with a heavyweight POWER punch. 5 days after the fight, I spoke to him and he admittedly added, PACQUIAO has fist so fast that even spiderman would have trouble catching up. Because for a long time, my uncle Barrera thought he was superman until he met the PACMAN. Since then, whenever he makes public statements, uncle Marco is no longer sure of his answers. One day he says, it was due to the forest fire that engulfed his training camp, next day he would say, its due to the brain metal plates-issue that surfaced before the fight, the next day he says, Pacquiao reminds him of himself 10 years ago. Now he's so silent that hardly does he make any statement about PACMAN-MORALES 3rd fight. I know why, deep in the heart of my uncle, difficult it may be to swallow or admit, PACMAN is unbeatable RIGHT NOW! He wants Eric to win but even if helped Morales at ringside, it would not stop Eric's legs from going marshmallow at a rate PAC throws his 4-5 combinations at unbelievable speed, power and accuracy.

The ups in this fight clearly points toward the Pacman. Every area of comparison between the two fighters seems Pacquiao is at an advantage. Maybe the the best area that Manny has over Morales is his stamina. The dude is clearly a good model for the energizer bunny. It seems Manny always has an unlimited supply of backup batteries in his "trunks" everytime he goes the distance in a fight. Or probably it\'s his quick recuperative abilities that makes him keep going and going and going....I say endurance will make the Pacman win this fight.

Hello @here I wud guess you're not a Filipino thats why your comments are like that. And as for me as a Filipino I consider Pacman as A Great Filipino Hero and I know each and every people here in this country would agree to what I am saying. The media is just being "Media", you know what I mean! About the fight I think you should separate this one from the other fights because of the styles of this two warriors in the ring. They are like two Bombs waiting to explode in the ring. PAcman by TKO either 2nd or 8th round

I think the key to this fight is the determination of each other to win. No doubt these guys have seen it all and have mastered the art inside the ring but the one who has the more wits and guts shall win. Morales will come prepared and Manny knows it. Manny has the strength but sometimes tend to be relax inside the ring, which will make him lose. He must understand winning isn't everything, its about being the best, being the champion! Go Manny!

Let's get real man.....This is going to be a war......each have won a battle but Morales will win the war....Simple as that.....i just start cracking up because of what some people say "Manny could of won the 1st fight if it wasn't for a cut..jajajajajaja...... 29 years old is not a disadvantage to Morales. Morales was to confident in the 2nd battle and thought he didn't need his father as a trainer in that brawl. Yes he made a mistake and paid for it. Now is the time to prove who is the king of the jungle. I guarantee there will not be a 4th fight. This is the last and final and Morales will be victorious........

History and past fights provided us a glimpse of what can happen come the grand finale...but we're not sure what would be the outcome. Media hype pushed this war into the brink of collosal proportion between the finest warriors of aztec and malayan races have ever produced. Pride and patriotism is a matter that resides in the adoring fans and countrymen but in the end, it all boils down to execution, will to win and destiny. I'm a Filipino, and I'm for Pacquiao, whatever the outcome might be. The resiliency, courage and will are infectious and best typifies the character of being Filipino. The feeling of being superior among races comes once in a while. And this time is one of them.

Being bored in a final of a trilogy is a thing of a past. There 's a saying that the only permanent thing here in this world is change. so there it is, the past have changed because a NEW BREED OF WARRIOR is born. who he is? ,but of course! no other than PACMAN. but , i really like his past MONICKER as a DESTROYER and not as a pacman because he doesn't just eat his opponents but completely pulverizing and disecting them. And there's no doubt that this will going to happen to morales.Sorry but it's time to surrender the flag. retire!!!

For Erik, maybe its time to raise the white flag up. Your reign is over, it's pacman's time just accept the fact that you're nothing
but a small kind of a bird trying to be an EAGLE . I bet you will
only last in just 4 rounds. Anyway Goodluck may you have a lucky
punch to knock manny out or else you will wake-up in the hospital. go manny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tarver-Jones III was as anti-climactic as they come. That trilogy (though certainly far less exciting as a whole, compared to most others) will always be best remembered by that one straight left Antonio dropped on Roy's jaw in the rematch. Considering how unforgettable the third fight was, they could've stopped the rivalry at two... Ditto for Chiquita-Carbajal III, the only fight of their series that proved to be a letdown. And even w/ Chiquita taking two out of three, the one bout most recall is Carbajal's miraculous off-the-canvas, come-from-behind knockout win in the first fight... Even if Pac-Morales III isn't as exciting as the other two, it's a rubber match that's well-earned the showcase it's getting. I'm not sure what to expect, but the way these two almost always come to fight, I'm springing $49.95 for it regardless.

folks, it all boils down to this: one who has a rock hard face wins! and manny pacquiao, my kababayan, bayani ng Pilipinas, has a hard as a rock face! in the first fight, we all saw how bloody his face was and still he wasn't brought down by EM! on the 2nd fight, no bloody face, no distraction, and MP knocked EM down! now that's what you call a decisive win! MP will KO EM 4 sure, again! now let's all enjoy this exciting fight over a bottle of San Miguel Beer! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! :)

I am a fan of both the "pacman" and "el terible"...I've been a boxing fan for all my conscious life OF 34 years and being a filipino i like the pacman but my boxing instinct and knowledge favors "el terible", deep inside, EMOTIONS AND LOYALTY ASIDE, i know as well as other boxing analyst/experts KNOW that "el terible" is more sound and a complete boxer than the "pacman" even at this stage where everybody almost everybody counted him out, although he got ko'd in their 2nd fight, i know it was due to the sudden change of weightclass that did him in...and rather came confident and ill prepared...but this time around i know "el terible" is very eager, determined and well prepared to get his respect back and silence everybody that counted him out including the "PACMAN" himself, .....i know a lot of my countrymen will be angry but my money is for "el terible" and will root for him come fightnight and i believe Erik "el Terible" Morales still has what it takes to be come a World Champion again and he deserves it....this third fight will live up to its hype because "el terible" will never back down to any of Pacquiao aggressiveness, with his father back to his corner morales needs to stick to his fight plan but if he chooses to slug it out i know he can take the pacman's punching power....i just don't know what will happen if the "pacman" gets hit with "el terible's" power punch coz i can still remember the ghosts of the pacman's past against Nadel Hussein.........

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
