Carlos Baldomir

Monday Oct 30, 2006

You forget, Carlos, that you’ve scored only 13 knockouts in your career (43-9-6). Those aren’t exactly “hide the kids and lock the door” kind of numbers. No one is confusing you with Carlos Monzon.

Carlos Baldomir, Heart and Chutzpah

By Rick Folstad

If he was a drinking man, I’d say it was just the booze talking.

If he was known for his smart mouth, I’d say the lip was expected.

If he was trying to play head games, I’d say he was just setting the table.

But Carlos Baldomir isn’t known as a boozer, and he doesn’t seem to be full of sass. And he has to know you don’t play head games with “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr.

So maybe the whole thing was just taken out of context, you know, words twisted and turned, nuances ignored, entire sentences left out.

He didn’t mean it.

Honest.

Or maybe it’s simply that Baldomir has been reading too many of his own press clippings.

He says he’s still planning on knocking Mayweather out when the two fight for Baldomir’s WBC welterweight title Nov. 4 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (HBO pay-per-view).

Baldomir made the bold knockout prediction several weeks ago, or shortly after the Mayweather fight was put together.

At the time, I figured it was just a show of bravado on Baldomir‘s part, a way of setting the mood, a preemptive strike aimed at Mayweather.

Sure, Carlos, sure. You’re going to knock him out. Right.

I didn’t think he really meant it.

But then he said it again this week, and now I’m beginning to think the guy actually means it. He really thinks he can do it. He‘s serious. And maybe a little crazy. And a little craziness might help.

Baldomir says Mayweather will be an easier fight then the Zab Judah fight earlier this year, the one Baldomir won by decision back in January. The one that first brought Baldomir’s name to our attention. The one that eventually led to Baldomir’s ninth-round TKO over Arturo Gatti in July.

“[Judah] was a southpaw,” Baldomir was quoted as saying. “This guy (Mayweather) is a righty, so it will be easier for me…I wasn’t able to knock Judah out because he kept holding on the whole time. This guy is fast, but I will be able to knock him out.”

Wait a second, Carlos. This guy won’t be holding onto you, he’ll be taking pot shots at your head.

And this guy, even at welterweight, is still quicker than most bantamweights.

“You guys forget that he’s fighting at a heavier weight now,” Baldomir went on. “He’s not going to be as fast as people think.”

I’d hate to live on the difference.

You forget, Carlos, that you’ve scored only 13 knockouts in your career (43-9-6). Those aren’t exactly “hide the kids and lock the door” kind of numbers. No one is confusing you with Carlos Monzon.

And even a slowed down, heavy, clumsy Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) is still going to be faster than a speeding bullet, slicker than a banana peel.

If Gatti’s hand speed was a five or a six on a scale of one to 10 with 10 being the fastest, Mayweather is a 14.

Asked what he would bring to the fight that the other 36 fighters who have lost to Mayweather didn’t bring, Baldomir said “the only thing different that I am going to bring is more heart and more [chutzpah].”

Careful.

That’s just enough to get you hurt in this league.

wayne:  The difference is this time the spotlight is also on Baldomir. Unlike the previous 2 fights against Gatti and Judah. Mayweather Jr. however is used to being under the spotlight. In fact Mayweather Jr outdistances Baldomir in every category the biggest being the small intangibles that add up and can take a fighter out of his game plan. Baldomir seems to believe that Mayweather Jr is a easy fight. Baldomir has never been on the same level as Mayweather Jr. So Carlos Baldomir will be in for a big shock come Saturday. Mayweather Jr. will defeat Baldomir by wide decision.

pitbull:  I think he just wants attention..

Jimbo:  what an unfortunate mis-match, thank goodness for Paquiao-Morales coming up soon.

Shaka:  This is Gatti vs Mayweather 2. The person who will give PBF is Sugar Shane not Chicken De La WhoYa

bulldog:  i wanna see PBF get his ass whooped but i cant see Baldomir doing the business on him,,yeah hes gritty,,can take a good punch but PBF will box Baldomir till hes dizzy,,but then again its a wise fight by PBF to enhance his status with one of the easier fights he has to pick from.

JP:  I personally believe that Baldomir will pull off a split decision upset in a classic bout that will not diminish the reputation of either man. Remember, Baldomir is a real professional, and he's hungry. This man will come fully prepared. Floyd will win the early rounds, but as the fight progresses Baldomir's strength advantage as the bigger man will begin to pay dividends. This is NOT a mismatch. CB's a true, hungry welterweight. This is a superb matchup.

mick:  I know on paper pbf has it all , his record leaves little doubt as to the outcome of this fight .But isn't it nice to think that Baldomir might just get in the lucky punch .Even if Floyd has to make a mistake for that to happen.I say go baldomir. After all that's why we will all be watching.

larry:  I agree, as much as I respect Floyd's skill and ability I cant wait until he fights a top notch opponent and stops getting into the ring with all the B and C boxers. Unfortunately, I dont think that he will any time soon, yet, for some one who claims to be the best ever and completely without fear it is undeniable that the Pretty Boy is ducking Margarito with a passion!!
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 07:57:09 AM
GC:  I am just confused how Baldomir honestly thinks he can knock Floyd out. I'm not only looking at his thirteen knockouts I'm talking about the way he uses his power. I think Mayweather is just to smart for him because if you look at the bout with Carlos and Arturo then you would see that the only reason that he even scored a knock out with him because of his lack of defense and the way he was just taking unnecessary punishment. In the end of all this I think Mayweather will simply pinpoint all this man's flaws and show them to the world.

brother B:  this is going to be an easy fight for PBF, the real fight is going to be him and Sugar Shane, man now that will be a rumble, but everybody has a punchers chance unfortunately it is not Baldomir, PBF wins an easy decision. oh yeah he did lose the first Castillo fight
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 09:11:59 AM
Lawdog:  Floyd will win this fight. He's not only talented, but also a smart fighter. Everyone thought that Diego would be a challenge and look what happened. He will do the same with Margarito whenever that fight takes place. I am not a PBF fan. My statements are based on what he has consistently brought to the table.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 09:29:46 AM
Brandon:  It's hard to believe that Baldomir, who is a very likeable guy and easy to root for, can corner Mayweather. Judah displayed that Floyd can be hurt, but Judah was just as quick as Floyd. Furthermore, Judah backed off, Floyd made adjustments and won the fight. I can see Baldomir being able to hurt Mayweather and even knock him out... Baldomir's power is underestimated. But you have to be able to catch Floyd, and then ya have to be able to land the hard shots. Neither is going to be easy for anyone, and Baldomir is pretty slow and plodding... But Floyd is exceptionally quick and a defensive genius. We can only hope, but hope don't win fights...
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 09:40:59 AM
rudy:  Floyd has a good shot at losing this fight, because Carlos is the natural bigger stronger guy. He may be slow and flawed, which we did see against Gatti and Judah, but what happened late in those fights? Baldomir's constant pressure, body punching, and ability to make those fights into brawls gave him the W. Mayweather had trouble with Castillo in the 1st fight, where Castillo made it a fight instead of a boxing match up, and I see Baldomir being able to out muscle him in the ring and make it a fight. It will be a good fight, and I see Baldomir pulling it off late with a KO or a Split Decision...give Tata some credit he hasnt lost since '98......and Margarito would destroy Floyd, hence why he hasnt even mentioned his name as a possible opponent, if he wants to the #1 in the world at least beat the # 1man in the division before you start talkn about being the best!!!!
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 11:12:16 AM
MR POUND FOR POUND:  margarito is a bumb .. he shouldnt be mentioned in the same sentence as floyd .. margarito needs to stop ducking paul williams ... floyd will win this fight easily probably on a late stoppage due to cuts, swelling, or baldomair taking unneccesary punishment .... then floyd will be tested against shane ... it will be the same as the zab fight ... 1st 3 rounds will be close then floyd will walk all over the man .,.... then its de la hoya who will get a beating just like gatti got and like baldomair will get this saturday .... dont be surprised if floyd fights spinks instead of shane to win a title in his 5th weight class .... HANDS DOWN FLOYD MAYWEATHER IS THE MOST TALENTED BOXER EVER TO PUT ON A PAIR OF GLOVES AND HE CONTINUES TO PROVE HIMSELF... PEOPLE WHO DONT KNOW BOXING AND ITS HISTORY AND THE POLITICS OF THE GAME SHOULD BE BANNED FROM SPEAKING ON IT .....BALDOMAIR IS TOO SLOW AND TOO FLAWED TO WIN JUST LIKE SHANE AND DE LA HOYA .... AND MARGARITO .,..... WHEN HAVE YOU EVER SEEN FLOYD MAKE A MISTAKE IN HIS CAREER LET ALONE THE PAST 3 YRS????? HE GETS BETTER WITH EVERY FIGHT NOONE ELSE DOES THAT!!
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 11:39:55 AM
jt:  baldomir's power is underestimated? he only has 13 knockouts! if floyd can take judah's shots he can take carlos' shots. this fights gonna be a cakewalk. hate to say it, since i'll probably end up buying it, but it will be. the only interesting wrinkle is the lack of roger in floyd's corner. as far as carlos talking about knocking floyd out--what do you expect him to say? of course he's going to predict the most definitive ending to the fight. floyd is no judah, and he sure as hell aint gatti. he wants his shot at oscar, and he's not going to let baldomir eff that up. one more thing: baldomir is no poor man's castillo either.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 11:47:41 AM
Chris:  I would rather have seen Baldomir versus Kosta Tszu (I think the styles make for a great fight), and PBF versus Antonio Mararito or Hatton at a catch weight with the winners fighting each other.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 12:41:34 PM
Nelson Feliciano:  This fight has all of the markings of the Leonard/Duran fight - put the shoe where they fit. If Mayweather sticks to boxing, then you might get a "no mas" from Baldomir, but I think it will go to the score cards. If Mayweather wants to turn it into a slug-fest, like Gatti erroneously did, then we may see Mayweather's first defeat by narrow UD.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 12:46:48 PM
William A Major:  baldomir will beat mayweather........you guys who are saying that pbf is going to mop the floor with baldomir are drinking to much kool aid at floyds. ha ha
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 01:23:10 PM
Anthony:  I cannot believe how many people think this contest is a no-brainer. Mayweather's phenomenal and is the undisputed P4P champion, but Baldomir is a true, rugged, and serious prizefighter that has been undefeated for longer than recent memory, and is naturally much BIGGER than Floyd. The guy walks around at 185. People are in for a real shock. Baldomir is just coming into his own and I think he'll win a very close decision.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 03:34:46 PM
usa-hole:  Sorry Anthony, but you need to stop smoking that cheap sh!t. Baldomir much bigger than Floyd? Are you out of your mind? The guy walks around at 180-185 fat and out of shape. Floyd stays in shape. Baldomir is not a big welterweight. They will be around the same size come fight night, but floyd will look more chisel, foshizzle. Margarito/Cintron/P.Williams...those are big welters. Floyd will win this one no problemo, mark my words! Baldomir is a tough guy, but he will be out classed on Nov 4.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 06:53:23 PM
Brandon:  If Margarito is a "bumb" (read bum), then why in the hell is Floyd Mayweather, Jr. going to such trouble to not fight him? I agree Floyd is phenominal, but he works harder at dodging the best fights than he does to sign them. If you claim to be the best, prove it... just like all the great fighters. Floyd's prime years are closing in on him, why squander it fighting bouts that mean nothing. The Baldomir fight fortunatly does have a little bit of meaning, but look over the last three years. If Floyd wins this fight, like I believe he will, where will he go from there? He needs to take a hard look at Roy Jones, Jr. and Roy's career. Roy got to the point where he put business first. Sure he made a lot of money, but at the end of his career when had squandered it for the sake of business, and then he compromised it because he couldn't handle the criticism and got the shit beat out of him more than once... that will be the lasting memory of Roy Jones, Jr. to many people. If Floyd is great, which I suspect he might be, then it's in his best interest to prove it and quit talking about it. Floyd, the clock is ticking...
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 07:16:53 PM
chrisL:  I think it's great to see so many people at odds about who the winner might be. Hopefully that means bigger numbers for this fight. I think mayweather will win if he sticks to BOXING. I think his reaction to his win against Gatti was a big indicator that he doubted himself. He was balling in the ring after he won cause he was shocked I think. He's settled into his own at this weight now though I believe, but no one has really ever tested his chin. He needs to stay off the ropes, as he tends to fold up in a rather poor defense on the ropes and if he finds himself there a lot, he could be in trouble. About the comment of Baldomir walking around at 180, that's a discredit to his training and it's harder on his body, so who cares what he walks around at. It only matters what his weight is on the night of the fight, and most people unless they are Gatti, aren't gonna put on more than 10-12 lbs the day after a weigh in. Floyd is a MUCH, MUCH better boxer and fighter than Baldomir, BUT, Carlos has MUCH more to lose in this fight. If he loses, he'll have a much harder time finding a big money fight again

G G CHAMP:  THIS MAN DON`T KNOW WHATS WAITING FOR HIM ON SAT NIGHT IN VEGAS...JUST TAKE THE MONEY AND GET OUT THIS GAME CAUSE UR GOIN TO GET HURT...PBF WINNING BY TKO.
Tuesday Oct 31, 2006 09:44:51 PM
Wilson:  If Margarito is such a bum, then what does that make Henry Bruseles and Sharmba Mitchell? Pretty Boys are amazing in their logic.
Wednesday Nov 1, 2006 07:17:29 AM
rudy:  excellent point Brandon, thats a great way at looking at Floyd's career so far, he is just strolling along making big money talking big game, but still doesnt get the respect he thinks he deserves. Floyd doesnt get the respect bc he wins a title and then avoids the stiff competition in the division. I mean Floyd is good, but to say the best ever, your retarded Mr. Pound for Pound, get off Floyd's nuts! Margarito would destroy Mayweather w/in 6 rounds! and people who keep saying Shane Mosley vs PBF should happen need to shut up! thats a boring fight that is just two name fighters going against each other, It be a worthless fight with nothing to prove and if Mayweather wins - Mosley excuse is he's old........and Margarito ducking P. Williams?? what are u talking about? Paul Williams just came up the ranks, he has beat up on B & C rated fighters and wants a shot at Margarito? NO WAY! Sharmba Mitchell, Walet Mathysse(or something like that), gimme a break! Margarito is the #1 man in this division and if PBF wants that title fight Margarito and take it from him, but for now be quiet all you PBF fans!!!!
Wednesday Nov 1, 2006 08:33:40 AM
Ian:  I would have to agree with the gentleman's point above this one. Mayweather is a very talented fighter, but the competition he has faced in his division has not been the upper echelon. I would like to see him fight Margarito but he must get past Baldomir. I think this fight will go the full 12 rounds but I do not know about the upset. Mayweather will get by Baldomir........barely.
Wednesday Nov 1, 2006 04:12:51 PM
Shaka:  This is a Gatti vs Mayweather 2. Mosley is very likkely to give mayweather problems because he is fast, he throws combinations and does not rely on one punch. That's Mayweathers possible first loss

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
