Shannon Briggs

“I’m so happy, I can’t wait to fight,” said Briggs. “I’m looking forward to being the WBO heavyweight champion of the world on Nov. 5. I’m looking forward to going on all the shows – Letterman, Leno.”

Giddy Shannon Briggs

By Rick Folstad

There were moments Wednesday when Shannon Briggs sounded almost giddy, like a kid on his eighth birthday who just found a pony tied to a tree in his backyard.

Talking about his Nov. 4 heavyweight title fight against WBO champ Sergei Liakhovich (23-1, 14 KOs) at Chase Field in Phoenix (SHOWTIME), Briggs (47-4-1, 41 KOs) said on a conference call that he was, well, pretty darn excited about his opportunity to bring a dying division back to the land of the living.

“I’m chillin’,” he said, sharing the conference call with Liakhovich. “I’m so happy, I can’t wait to fight. I’m looking forward to being the WBO heavyweight champion of the world on Nov. 5. I’m looking forward to going on all the shows – Letterman, Leno. Just making it happen. I want to bring some prestige and some life back to boxing. With these dead champions we’ve got right now, we need it, man.”

Giddy.

Of course, the heavyweight division isn’t the only thing Briggs wants to resuscitate. His boxing career could use a little CPR. It’s had its dead time. But that’s because Briggs said he thought he could slip by on talent alone. The hell with roadwork and sparring. He was Shannon “Kiss My Ass” Briggs.

He should have known better.

“I just took fights and never learned how to train,” he says. “I never did any of this stuff (running, sparring, preparing) before.”

This stuff? It’s called getting in shape.

But he claims he’s changed, that the old Shannon Briggs has been kicked out of the house and the new Briggs has moved in and found things comfortable. He runs now, and actually spars. And he’s won his last 11 fights.

So now Briggs is ready to take his rightful place among world champions. Don’t think so? Just ask him.

“This is [my] destiny,” he said. “It’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s got nothing to do with [Liakhovich]. This is beyond him. He’s just a small piece of the equation. He’s nothing. I‘m just looking forward to fulfilling my prophecy (to be undisputed champion). It‘s all good. I‘m having a good time with this. I couldn‘t be more happy.”

Briggs said he plans to give the people what they want: blood.

“They want to see his head decapitated, so that‘s what I‘m coming for,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Not the decapitating. Not really.

What Briggs is doing is looking at the bigger picture without forgetting about taking care of the little things, like beating a tough Liakhovich.

He’s looking at this fight as an opportunity to begin cleaning up the division, do a little mopping, change the names at the top to something easier to pronounce.

Something like Briggs.

“Shannon Briggs as the heavyweight champion of the world is a beautiful thing,” he said, maybe rushing things a little. “It can definitely bring a lot of people back to the sport. I’m ugly, but I‘m funny. That’s my motto.”

Briggs is right when he says people don’t know who the heavyweight champs are.

They don’t know who Liakhovich is or Nikolay Valuev, or Oleg Maskaev or even Wladimir Klitschko. And he’s probably right when he says people don’t care. At least they don’t seem to care in this country.

“These guys aren’t personable. These guys are not marketable,” he said. “They’re ugly, they get on my nerves. I‘m tired of them. Everyone wants to see a champion they can identify with. And that‘s what I‘m here to do. It’s time to clean up this mess.”

Liakhovich has his own plans for Nov. 4. He said if Briggs jumps on him early, it will be a short night for Briggs.

“I know he’s going to come swinging, throw a lot of hard shots,” Liakhovich said. “But he needs to think about it that every time he swings, he’s going to get hit.

“I will have for him many surprises. He talks like he’s going to knock me out. Bring it on. We’ll see.”

Toward the end of the call, voices were raised when Briggs cut in on Liakhovich, who was answering a question.

“I will take your ugly head off,” Liakhovich finally snapped.

“I’ll see you soon,” Briggs said, laughing. “I can’t wait.”

Giddy.

Arno:  He thinks the WBO title will get him on Leno and Letterman? Sounds like somebody has eaten too many punches.

Phil:  Briggs could get on a talk show if he won, I think. I expect he'll come in at 260 and get KO'd though.

John:  I believe Briggs will pull off the upset. Remember, he had a prime Lennox Lewis on queer street. Hopefully's he's learned and matured and can apply that wisdom and win this thing. I think he beats Klitschko and Maskaev. I don't think he could get to Valuev though. For a giant, the guy's stamina is remarkable. If he could just put his punches together a little better, and land more often, he'd be unstoppable.

uncle phil:  i imagine sportswriters would like a non-russian champ just for the easier name spelling...also, headlines like: "shannon finally out of the brig", etc...we'll see him on jerry springer or maury before he's on leno/let, but if he comes in under 250 he'll win...

Rudy:  Old heavyweight contenders who think they can make it because they have no faith in the fighting skills of the former Soviet Union Boxers. Briggs losses! Liakhovic is a solid fighter who has some speed, can box and punch. Late knockout victory for Sergei, but seriously why do all of these old fighters way out of their hey-day think they can win the title(Holyfield, Briggs, McCall, Tua)?? Whats next? Ray Mercer thinks he can save the heavyweight division? Give the Soviets some credit! They won the titles by sound having boxing skills, not just knockout power....

William A Major:  Liakhovich is the best out of them all,he showed that when he hammered brewster, and i mean hammered, and brewster is tough.he throws an abundance of punches that are good solid shots and stays busy till the final bell.he has a great chin and all the skills to be a great champ.he 's really an exciting guy to watch and i think hell prove it again when he fights briggs who probably shouldnt have aggravaited him.

Nelson Feliciano:  Liakhovich shows he has heart and determination, but he made a lot of mistakes that Brewster failed to capitalize on. He dropped his right too much when he jabbed, and leaned forward a lot when exchanging. If Shannon does his homework and Liakkhovich doesn't correct those mistakes, one or two correctly timed left crosses or right uppercuts can spell doom for the current WBO champ, who came from a "nobody" to a "somebody" overnight. Does this mean I'm predicting a K.O. win for Shannon? Maybe. It all depends on Liakhovich more than Briggs. Briggs hasn't faced really good competition in his last 11 wins; Liakhovich has faced better. One thing is for sure, Briggs is a throwback to the earlier days when boxers fought as if winning by decision didn't mean anything.

Perry:  Liakhovich beat Breswter, who was beaten by Clifford Ettienne. That's right, The Black Rhino! And Sergei was knocked out by Maurice Harris. Yes, he's talented and is seemingly sturdy but this is a real opportunity for Briggs. This is a very winnable fight. Not unlike when Bruno mustered out a victory against McCall (as an aside, I don't think McCall, with his absolutely granite chin, should be dismissed summarily. If he trains properly and is mentally sound (big if's), he's dangerous), Briggs will do so here.

Loren Evans:  Liakhovich is going to win this fight by decision. And the current state of american heavyweights is very sad. Other then Calvin Brock and Toney there are no USA heavys that are good enough to beat or compete against any of the current heavyweight champs. Briggs is just another has been American Heavyweight just like Holyfield, Tyson and Byrd. Except that those american heavys use to actually be good.

rudy:  Perry is doesnt matter who Liakhovich lost to in the past, he is a better fighter now and a better fighter than Briggs, plus he seems to be the more talented fighter heading into the bout off his victory against Brewster. And who has Briggs fought lately?? Nobody, a bunch of carefully selected fighters by his promoters, I dont think anybody can name one of Briggs recent oppenents off the top of their head.

Stan Harrington:  I had no idea Sergei got KO'd by Mo Harris! And that fight was immediately preceded by Harris' being KO'd by none other than Henry Akinwande. That's just unbelievable. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for Shannon Briggs. Briggs by KO.
Friday Oct 20, 2006 02:43:05 PM
Perry:  Other than Brewster, Liakhovich's roster of opposition is a who's who of nobody's. The only name's are two journeymen, Domenic Guinn and Mo Harris, who KO'd him. I agree, Briggs has fought nobody of late, but his overall oppostion has been much, much stiffer than Sergei's. If Shannon is in shape and is mentally prepared, I give him a very legitimate chance of winning.

C LO:  BRIGGS IS GOING TO WIN IN A CLOSE FIGHT. DESPITE BEING TKO IN THE 6TH ROUND (BRIGGS) BY LENNOX LEWIS, BRIGGS STILL HURT LEWIS PLENTY OF TIMES DURING THE FIGHT. HE SHOWED HEART BY GETTING UP FROM 3 KNOCK DOWNS. WHITE WOLF IS A WHYTE HOPE IN MY OPINION. HE IS A GOOD BOXER BUT NOT THAT GOOD. BRIGGS IS NOT THAT GOOD EITHER BUT I LIKE HIS CHANCES BECAUSE OF PAST OPPISITION HE HAS FACED.
Friday Oct 20, 2006 03:27:06 PM
rudy:  Perry, come on man! Stiffer competition??? what like 8yrs ago...these old heavyweights need to call it quits and move along for better fighters to get their moment in the sun...all they do is take up space, lose to one another and no one stands out, people who have faith in these guys are old fans who need to let the guys who actually have competitive fights go! not Briggs, Mercer, Holyfield, Rahman, just over the hill fighters...who need to move on with their lives and forget boxing...although boxing careers never end good, look at tyson

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
