Moxie and A Guy Named Baldomir
By Rick Folstad
You’ve got to like the moxie of WBC welterweight champ Carlos Baldomir, a guy about to jump off boxing’s version of a cliff.
You’ve heard the story. The unknown fighter from someplace south of the border – maybe South America – who suddenly shows up and beats the baddest fighter in town, and they call it a fluke, an accident, an aberration.
They think he’s just a one-shot artist, an anomaly. But then he pulls off another eye-blinking upset, and now they’re not so sure what to think about the guy.
Maybe he is better than his clippings say he is. Maybe he is the next south-of-the-border phenom, the next great welterweight champion, the next reincarnation of Carlos Monzon, only smaller.
But they’re not really sure yet if this guy is just that good or if he’s just the luckiest SOB in the world.
So the guy decides it’s time to show the doubters and the skeptics and the hardcore just what he can do. When they offer him a fight against the baddest fighter on the planet, the lucky SOB from south of the border, who has beaten two guys he had no business beating, grabs that fight quicker than you can say “Baldomir.”
So the “lucky” SOB is now dead in the sights of Floyd Mayweather Jr., which is like being in the sights of Hannibal Lecter, only worse. And what does the luckiest SOB do? He spills his drink in Lecter’s lap.
On purpose.
“[Mayweather] is faster and more talented then Gatti,” said Baldomir, who stopped Gatti this summer after beating Zab Judah in January. “But he doesn’t have the heart.”
Say again? The best pound-for-pound fighter in the world doesn’t have any heart?
It’s a very high cliff he’ll be jumping off.
Give Baldomir credit for believing in himself, even if the rest of the world still has some doubts.
So why did he take this fight? Why Lecter?
Baldomir made it simple. He said he accepted the fight because it was a way of assuring everyone that he’s a great champion.
“It will be a difficult fight with Mayweather (36-0, 24 KOs) because he is fast and he’s sharp,” Baldomir (43-9-6, 13 KOs) said at a recent press conference in New York City promoting their Nov. 4 fight at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas (HBO PPV). “But I know with my physical ability and my boxing ability that I will no doubt win.”
Moxie.
And maybe a dash of foolhardiness.
The big name and the bigger reputation of Mayweather don’t appear to leave Baldomir questioning his choice of careers. No outward signs of intimidation. No mumbling. Instead, he takes the other road, the crazier one.
“I feel if I do connect,” Baldomir boldly predicts, “he’s going down.”
That’s considered downright blasphemy in some camps.
But the lucky SOB is not even close to finishing.
“[Judah and Mayweather] are actually the same,” Baldomir said. “But it is easier [to fight] Mayweather because he comes right at you.”
Yeah. Like a king cobra.
Mayweather has his own ideas on how Baldomir got this far.
“I think Gatti got fatigued and Zab overlooked him,” said the baddest fighter on the planet. “He had Zab hurt. A true champion is a great finisher.”
So does Baldomir have a chance?
“He’s either going to go out on his back or on his face,” Mayweather said. “Or maybe he’ll raise that white flag in the air. There are three ways it could go.
According to Baldomir, there might be four.

his guy Baldy is trying to get mayweather of is game. he know that Floyd can give hom the boxing lesson of his life. So his only hope is if mayweather comes and tries to slug it out. Its more so desperate on his part, not really a bravery thing. But it wont work. Floyd wil execute as usual. Someday he wil be challenged. But it wont be on Nov 4th,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,trust me

If mayweather has any heart then he'll need to bring when he gets in the ring with this guy. mayweather won't be fighting an arturo gatti in this fight. Gatti was star struck by mayweather before that fight started . He was completly intimidated and didn't know how to fight mayweather. Baldomir is all smarts and about timing, and a dangerous fighter for mayweather. Think of castillo only bigger and with more confidence.

Baldomir is no boxer, he's just a come forward tuff bastard but he's still going to get schooled by Mayweather a highly skilled natural boxer. I'd pick the Boxer over the puncher everytime. I predict a UD or a late round stoppage for Pretty boy Floyd.

I usually pick the underdog in a fight, so all you guys dont take this personal like. Baldomir will win by tko, round 9 or 10. He is not the most skilled or hardest puncher but he has what it takes to pull off the upset. If Mayweather trys to walk him down like hes been doing lately, he might wake up in the locker room with his first lost.

I expect you'll see Little Floyd do some different things in the ring come Nov. 4. He hasn't been in with a legimate puncher in awhile so look for the pull counter. Baldy won't last 8 rounds. When he gets measured after about 1 minute into round one it will be a tuff cakewalk. The 2 fight wonder will wish he hadn't won those 2 fights to earn this ass whuppppppppppppin!!!!!!!!

No way PBF gets stopped this time around. Something the boxing world does't get about this guy: He could take on any fighter in the world and win. Most of the time it wouldn't even look close. Margarito thinks he's the first long, gunning power hitter ever to call out Floyd Mayweather? Baldomir thinks he's better pound for pound than Castillo, Corrales? This guy took Gatti in FIVE, he Mitchell in SIX and decisioned Judah. He's changed from a more complete package to a stick and move sort of fighter so a knockout may not be in order with Baldomir. Faster guys with better timing tha Baldomir have tried to lay a hard right on Mayweather and he's still undefeated. PBF by UD

I usually can rationalize my winner of choice, in thie case, I think it is a puzzle.Baldomir is 'rugged' , and he is going to give Mayweather trouble. Toughness is baldomir`s greatest weapon, and maybe, just maybe, he will outlast Floyd. Maywaether hasn`t been in a war for a long time. He is about to find that out. I think Baldomir will triumph by wearing Mayweather down and stopping him . (Possibly a cut or some physical damage such as rotator cuff injyry)

what happens when a guy steps into the ring to knockout you out and early on in the fight you realize you can't hurt him? I just don't think mayweather will be able to break this guy. Honestly! I'm just glad we get to watch the best welterweights go at it Nov 4th.

Mayweather has not fight any other tough fighter like castillo, when he lost in everybodies eyes except for the judges. Gatti was never really a great boxer. Judda lost to sorry ass spinx. To me he has never proved himself to be the best fighter of the era like some people call him. Anybody can choose to fight scrubbs and 99% of the time beat them. But i think he chose the wrong scrub this time trying to avoid Margarito. If he really was the best pound for pound he would not be scared to fight any body. My oppinion is that he is in it for the money, so he wants to avoid getting knockout by choosing the easyer opponents so he can have a shot at the big money Oscar De La Hoya; and that is where hes career ends, because he knows win or loose againt Oscar he will make big money. I think Baldomir is going to end Mayweathers dream on Nov. 4.

I was at the Gatti-Baldomir fight and was impressed by Baldomir. That being said, Rick, you're crazy. Yes, Castillo probably should have been given the decision in the first fight with Mayweather. But Mayweather did the right thing and gave him a rematch (though it may have been mandatory? I'm not sure), and SMOKED him. No way you could argue that Castillo won the second fight. Mayweather also annihilated Corrales, who looked pretty tough to most observers in Castillo-Corrales I. Baldomir had a very impressive year, but I think everyone is putting a little too much stock in the Gatti victory, this is a guy who was in absolute wars his entire career and has slowed down considerably in the last few; his only win in the last 3 fights was agains "Anonymous" Thomas Daamgard, and Mayweather . Baldomir has a great chin and a lot of heart, Mayweather has everything. I expect an entertaining fight, Mayweather UD.

Baldomir is right about 2 things, Mayweather has no heart, and Mayweather and Judah are the same, both do that sholder role and counter, they both jab a lot, they are both super fast, the only difference is that Mayweather is taller and comes forward with the straight right. Baldy is bigger, stronger, has a chin of steel, and he stays close and never stops attacking, he fights very brutal and rough a lot like Castillo, yeah Baldomir is slower, but he still put Gatti and Judah on their asses, Gatti gassed yes, why because Baldomir was not letting him breath if you watched their fight Baldomir was no more than 3 inches away from Gatti the whole fight, Zab is a shorter version of PBF and he hits harder than Floyd, if Zab hit Baldomir right on the button and did not even make him flinch how can Floyd hurt Baldy? I think Floyd will win by a cut, or UD. But I will not be suprised if Baldy knocks him on his skinny little fake welterweight ass. Go Baldy "do it for all the hispanics"

Gatti harbored the false impression that he could defeat Mayweather by shear size and force. That's when the pretty boy made Gatti's corner throw in the towel for him. I think that Floyd will be expecting to be hit hard and will meet force with force. Speed kills and Floyd has it. Baldomir is kind of like Gatti without the charisma..time 2! Baldomir has a punchers chance, but Floyd no longer overlooks anyone after the first Castillo fight.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
