Emanuel Augustus

For now, Augustus, without a title shot in his near future, will trudge along like he always does. Sometime, in the not-so-near future, he will be robbed of yet another decision.

Emanuel Augustus: The Freight Train Rolls Along

By Evan Korn

When Emanuel Augustus knocked out Courtney Burton last week on the season finale of "Friday Night Fights," it was sweet redemption, proof that sometimes boxing allows the wronged the opportunity to make things right.

Augustus, boxing’s favorite cult hero, is a veteran of 66 professional fights. Along the way, he has faced: Leavander Johnson, Leo Dorin, Micky Ward, Alex Trujillo, Floyd Mayweather, Ray Oliveira, Teddy Reid, Ivan Robinson, Diosbelys Hurtado, Antonio Diaz, and plenty of other undefeated whippersnappers and top-10 contenders.  Often fighting in opponents’ backyards on short notice, he has been the victim of more robberies than a liquor store clerk working the overnight shift. The worst theft of them all occurred on July 6, 2004 in Muskegon, MI. His opponent that evening was the same man he sent to the canvas last week.

Like he had done so many times before, Augustus was entering the lion’s den. The packed crowd had paid to see him be nothing more than a glorified sparring partner. At the first sign of trouble, he was supposed to give up, toss in the towel, and leave Michigan with yet another loss on his ledger. Sometime, the great innovators do not follow the script.

Augustus utterly dominated Burton that night, using his patented “drunken master” style to befuddle the hometown kid. Along the way, even as Augustus continued to assert his dominance, you could sense a tragedy (at least in the boxing sense) was unfolding before your very eyes. Referee Dan Kelley deducted a point from Augustus in the 8th round for merely spinning his opponent out of a clinch. Earlier in the contest, a clean body shot that knocked Burton down was incorrectly ruled a low blow.

After a heinous split decision was announced in Burton’s favor, you could sense the wind had been taken out of Augustus’ sails. He had been mugged in front of thousands of people, and as he circled the ring with his head down, Burton’s people celebrated like fools. As the boxing world cried out in disgust, Burton had this toothy grin painted on a face filled with false elation.

True to his journeyman title, he packed his bags and hopped on the freight train, just a man looking for an honest payday. After compiling a 2-1 record in 2006, he got the call to fight Burton again. In the eighth round of a close bout, Augustus cranked Burton with a left hook to the body. That body shot, coupled with a few follow-up blows, sent his beleaguered foe to the canvas. This time, Burton had no judges to rely upon, no referee to unjustly subtract points. At that moment of realization, Courtney Burton decided he would be better suited to stay on his knees as the count reached “10.”

For Augustus, it moved his record to an unspectacular, if not misleading, 33-27-6. But it did more than add another notch to the ol’ belt. It erased the demons of that unforgettable night a little more than two years ago.

For now, Augustus, without a title shot in his near future, will trudge along like he always does. Sometime, in the not-so-near future, he will be robbed of yet another decision. But that’s life when you are forced to play by the rules of others, under a boxing establishment that cares more about wins and losses than what you actually do in between the ropes. Emanuel Augustus exorcised his biggest demon last week. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t more demons to come, more reasons to just walk away from the sport.  Walking away would be against his nature, against the very fiber of a man who has learned to take more crap than he should.

As the Augustus drumbeat continues to grow within hardcore boxing circles, maybe he can finally receive the big money fight, the bout he has so richly deserved since his “fight of the year” against Micky Ward. If that happens, if he gets the call for a title shot, that would be the first just decision in a career devoid of them. For now, Augustus can revel in his latest triumph and take the freight train to the next stop. Where the train will take this old journeyman is anybody’s guess.

Brad Hill:  I would like to say that I truly admire Emmanuel's work in the ring. I actually was fortunate enough to be on the undercard of his last fight. As he usually is, I was brought in as an opponent, supposed to lose. I didnt. I fought the last fight of the night. Its boxers like Emmanuel that help inspire guys like me, because hes been there. And even though he has the record he has, HE was the show of the night as in most cases when he fights. Much love and respect to the inspiration....Emmanuel Augustus. Maybe we can meet up and spar sometime. In boxing, you never know.

WillMartin:  It is very unfortunate that his record, which is what most people look at, will hinder his chances of ever getting a title shot. This is a guy that the #1PFP fighter today, Floyd Mayweather, stated was the toughest fight of his career. I am very much a fan of Mr. Augustus, and appreciate the author's time in writing about this good man.

Judy:  Very good story about Emanuel Augustus. He has SO many fans that love his talent and truly care about him for the person he is. The picture suits the story, but Emanuel has a smile as charming as Sugar Shane. I'm hoping there will be a title fight for Emanuel. He has given so much to boxing and his fans. I think he would be refered to as a ring rat...which means he's always ready to take fights on short notice; always in shape. I never miss his fights, and wish him the best always.

JF:  Much thanks for your wonderful article. Mr. Augustus deserves all the opportunities in the world for giving the fans and the sport so much over the years. Last year, I was at Hampton Beach, NH and saw Augustus fight Oliveira. Augustus showed genuine concern and restraint in the ring... going multiple rounds without even ONE shot to Oliveira's head. Augustus took many shots and delivered only body-shots. What a great week to be an Augustus fan... a replay of the fight of the year with Ward on ESPN Classic and a win over Burton a few days later. I too wish you the best always. Thank you, Mr. Augustus. You have inspired me more than you can imagine. A tough, always-ready, class-act fighter.... you represent everything this sport shoud be.

sean:  I am currently in production on a non-fiction feature film on Augustus entitled "The Journeyman". My film will follow Emanuel until he gets a shot at a title or retires and on behalf of him and his trainer I would like to thank you for this article. Emanuel is a working class folk hero and he deserves more than boxing is giving him. He truely loves and appreciates his fans and the boxing writers that continue to support him and draw attention to his plight. So if you are a fan please don't hesitate to make your voice heard by calling or emailing his promoter Lou DiBella,HBO and Showtime and letting them know that you want to see him in a big fight.

Phil:  He's a real fighter, no doubt. Maybe his record doesn't get respect, but in the ring, he's to be respected or feared no doubt.

Cleo:  I just caught the Augustus-Ward fight the other day , jesus , what a fight. I had caught an Augustus fight a week or two prior against a kid who was undefeated and had just broke into the top ten (2001,I think)He fought on a two week notice and literally embarrassed this kid. Matter a fact he embarrassed him so bad I don't remember his name , course he probably didn't remember it either. Augustus, Unique fighter, lot a heart , helluva lot better than his record shows. But hell, everybody already knows that. A real gem.

GOMEZ:  I just met Augustus three days ago (07/25/07) and what a class act . As I watched him in training I couldn't stop and think that after all he's been through he still has the will to continue. What a guy... Not even Oscar de la Hoya has half the heart that Augustus has....

Mike McSorley:  I instantly became a fan of Emanuel Augustus back when he was known as Emanuel Burton in his fight against Diosbelys Hurtado. Great fight, I've followed his career ever since. His two handed smash to the face of Ray Oliveria was a classic, as was his Mickey Ward battle. He is undoubtedly the toughest "journeyman" out there. I hope he wins a world title with his new management team..He's always stayed active and he's due. This guy always comes to fight! Sooner or later someone will underestimate him and they'll get a rude awakening on their back. Most boxing insiders fear him though cause we all know he's a very tough fighter..Dont beleive me? Courtney Burton, Mickey Ward or Hurtado: all great fighters themselves.

Ruth Hill:  I am a big big fan of Emanuel Augustus. I don't care what style of fighting he does, it's fine with me. I'm waiting to see him fight again. I think it is wrong because the won't let him fight. Go ahead Emanuel, don't stop your style. My family and I love you.

mark:  emanuel's easily become my favourite boxer. i've looked up so many of his fights just to watch him do what he does best, and i've also seen the look on his face when he inevitably loses the split decision. apparently he's in australia atm (which is where i am), and i'm willing to fly over to wherever he is just to watch his next fight. mind you, i've never been a fan of boxing in my life i only just started taking an interest. keep your head up emanuel you're a inspiration

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
