Boxing News: Valuev Meets Barrett in Windy City
CHICAGO—Americans will get their chance to see undefeated 7-foot, 325-pound Nikolai “Giant Russian” Valuev, who has vowed to “conquer America” when he makes the second defense of his WBA title against Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on Oct. 7.
A stellar world championship co-feature has been added with undefeated WBC champion Tomasz Adamek, from Poland, facing Australian Paul “Hurricane” Briggs in a rematch. Their first meeting, in Chicago, was a brutal display of wills so special it has been remembered as one of last year’s finest bouts.
An IBF lightweight elimination bout scheduled for 12 rounds will also be included with No. 5-ranked contender Matt “Boom Boom” Zegan, from Wroclaw, Poland, taking on No. 9-ranked Nate Campbell, from Jacksonville, Fla., for the No. 1 position.
A three-city media tour hosted by Don King and Valuev’s German-based promoter Wilfried Sauerland to introduce to America the tallest, heaviest, first Russian and currently longest-reigning world heavyweight champion is planned for the last week in August with stops in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Tickets priced at $250, $200, $100, $75, $50 and $35, with a limited number of golden circle seats available at $500, go on sale Monday at 11 a.m. at the Allstate Arena box office (847-635-6601), online at Ticketmaster.com or through charge by phone by calling (312) 559-1212.

Valuev is not anything I'm going to get all excited about. First of all he struggled greatly with barely taking the (paper) title away from Ruiz. Second, he also really struggled in his previous fight against Larry Donald. Those guys aren't exactly going to be hall of famers, okay. Secondly, Valuev's opponents before the Donald fight have been softer competion then my sister. The knockout of Owen Beck in the first title defense was real nice, but Monte Barret has beaten Beck to so at least I can say he's more of a challenge than that. Still, Valuev is undefeated and I predict he will beat Barret by a wide decision in a similiar fashion the way Hasim Rahman beat Barret. The main point is Barret is a good top twentyish fighter who can hold his own, but Valuev is just good enough, not to mention freaking huge enough to tear him up. I still don't see a knockout happening though because Valuev should have more power for his size. In all fairness, Valuev and Sergei Liakhovich should be trying to unify their titles while "The Ring" #1 contender Wladmer Klitschko and #2 contender Oleg Maskaev unify their titles for the Real world championship. Those are the facts, it's my opinion on what should happen, but the fact remains on the Real title lineage.

2009 Reader Of The Year Weighs In On Legacies Of Pacquiao And Mayweather
"Pacquiao has proven....in the ring... time and time again that he is the greatest of this time. He has earned his respect. He begs for nothing. He is a man content with his growth, his family and his achievements. A man the world has now turned it's eyes to behold. Floyd Mayweather is not even close in stature. He may possess the greatest skills but he is not the Face of Boxing today. Google Manny Pacquiao. There are 20 million searches. Google Floyd. There are 6.5 million. Look at the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal and Time. Count how many words were used these past years to mention Floyd Mayweather. Then count the words still being printed about Manny. And keep counting. As I've said many times, Floyd has been too clever by half. He has short changed his public.....and has out-smarted himself. Manny will fight but a few more times. Enjoy it while you can. He is an all time great pugilist. Floyd, with all of his remarkable skills lack the will to be truly great in the biggest sense of the word. His legacy will look more like Holmes that Ali. He has earned it." ---November is half-way gone, but we don't need to keep counting ballots. It's a landslide. Fe'Roz has won the 2009 Reader of the Year award. His comments add to the website immeasurably, and he epitomizes the thoughtful, respectful, educated fan of pugilism we strive to cater to at TSS. Congrats, Fe'Roz, and please accept my thanks for being the valued member of this community that you are. Sincerely, Editor Mike
