Forrest Quartey

Sunday Aug 6, 2006

After this tough fight with Quartey, it’s doubtful Forrest would want to tangle with “Bazooka” again, although a rematch would mollify some of the people who questioned the decision: namely Lou DiBella, Ike Quartey, and a lot of fans.

Vernon Forrest Wins, But A lot of People Thought He Lost

By Mitch Abramson

Not everyone left Madison Square Garden happy on Saturday night. A lot of fans left feeling low. The promoter Lou DiBella left in a bad mood, and Ike Quartey left depressed. In a bout between two former welterweight titlists, Vernon Forrest won a controversial unanimous decision (depending on who you’re talking to) over Quartey in front of 3,012 fans at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

The decision was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd who felt that Quartey’s aggressive pursuit of Forrest throughout the match should have been rewarded with a victory. DiBella, Quartey’s promoter, was aghast at the verdict. Minutes after Forrest was awarded the 10-round junior middleweight fight, DiBella and Quartey set up camp along press row to plead their case.

Forrest was content to fight the hard-charging Quartey moving backward, choosing his shots prudently. Forrest was deducted a point in the ninth round for a low blow, but he buckled Quartey in the third round with a right uppercut, which seemed to be the punch of choice for Forrest. Quartey is built like a tank, but he sometimes lunged in with his shots, and Forrest was waiting with clean shots.

While a lot of people were questioning the decision (95-94, 95-94 and 96-93 for Forrest) maybe the better question is where does Forrest go from here? Another fight against Shane Mosley? A trip to the bank against Oscar De La Hoya? Who knows? After this tough fight with Quartey, it’s doubtful he would want to tangle with “Bazooka” again, although a rematch would mollify some of the people who questioned the decision: namely Lou DiBella, Ike Quartey, and a lot of fans.

In the co-feature, Kassim Ouma outclassed Sechew Powell in a 10-round junior middleweight bout. Kassim dictated the terms of the bout from the opening round, smiling and hopping into the ring during his ring entrance and stamping his style on the bout from the get-go. Ouma won by scores of 100-90, 96-94 and 97-93. Powell may have been from Brooklyn, but the hometown fans were nearly silent as their man was beaten from pillar to post. Ouma was simply too seasoned for Powell, who never gave up but also never had a chance.

The undercard featured the former ballyhooed prospect Jaidon Codrington, 22, fighting in his third bout since getting knocked out in 18 seconds by Allan Green on November 4. He won a six-round unanimous decision, 60-54 on all three scorecards, over long in the tooth former junior middleweight champion Carl Daniels in a super middleweight bout. Also in action was Andre Berto, an exciting, muscular 22-year-old from Winter Haven, Florida who disposed of Roberto Valenzuela at 2:19 of the first round in a welterweight fight. Berto improved to 14-0 with 12 knockouts.

Noriko Kariya, the sister of the Nashville Predators’ Paul Kariya of the NHL won a unanimous decision over Michelle Herron in a bantamweight fight to improve to 5-1-1.

In a pleasantly entertaining bout, “Punchin’” Pat Nwamu (12-1, 4 knockouts) stopped John Battle at 2:50 of round three. Nwamu is a tricky fighter to face because of his slow, awkward style, but he went after Battle from the first round, and he was rewarded for his aggressiveness in the cruiserweight bout. In the opening bout, Darling Jimenez (20-2-2, 11 knockouts), a former amateur in New York, knocked out Arturo Brambilla at 2:32 of the opening round.

jeff:  Mitch, I was wondering who I could contact to voice my utter dismay with the Forest decision over Quartey. Forrest was lucky to win three rounds. It also seems to me that every (well most) questionable decision in the last couple of years involves Malvina Lathon. It seems to me that she is bought and paid for; she is at best the most incompetent judge that’s out there. When is someone going to step up to the plate and stop her from judging fights? I have been a boxing fan for over twenty years and I am just totally sick with what is going on in boxing over the last couple of years. They have turned one of the greatest sports into the WWE. It is pathetic.

Rob Nargine:  Watched the fight, scored the fight, had Forrest ahead by a round or two at the end, same as the judges. It was a tough fight to score. Ike came forward the entire fight but couldn't land effectively. Forrest looked bad going backwards, but was effective keeping Ike at a safe distance for the most part, and landing solid uppercuts each round. I picked Quart going into the fight, and had to buy my friend a drink when he lost, but I thought Vernon squeeked out the win on my scorecard. MANY of the rounds could have gone either way. Actually, its the first time I can remember hoping for a Draw.

Melvin:  Here it is! Last night and ALOT LATELY, the judges seem to fall asleep and not pay attention. Ike surely beat Forest by at least 7 rounds to 3. Forest hurt him in an early round but it was clear that Ike regained control in the next round. Right before the decision Forest's corner seem just like Jerman Taylor's corner after the Winky and first Hopkins fight. I've never been to a professional boxing match but from my 15 years of being a fan I CAN TELL WHO WON THE FIGHT! That was a rubbery BIG TIME. Forest was running and Ike would block most of his punches OH WAIT NOW I GET IT- judges score punches on the gloves now (via Winky vs Taylor), but to sum it all up. Boxing judge's decisions should be able to be overturned. Or maybe have more judges positions around the 4 sides of the ring. This is just HORRIBLE.

ALLEN:  I have seldom been so angry with a decision. I was happy for Quartey as the official announcement of his much deserved win was about to take place, and then felt paralyzed with utter disbelief and shock when I heard Forrest\'s name announced. I don\'t know how Forrest can look himself in the mirror and try to tell anyone that watched the fights - other than the 3 village idiots - with a straight face, that he won. I used to think Forrest had class, and the way his head was hung low, there can\'t be any way he believed he won, this gift. Really sad for Quartey, I would have liked to see him move on...

Javier:  The judges not only stole the fight away from Quartey, but it also look like they ripped out and stole his heart from him too. Who can blame him for being upset. I can not understand how the judges could judge a fight like Ouma and Powell (the previous fight) one way, and then judge Quartey and Forrest (a similar style fight) and give a completely opposite decesion form the first. Quartey was the agressor. Quartey lead in puches thrown and landed. Quartey even lead in power punches stats, which shows he was landing clean, solid punches. Quartey, many times, seemed to have Forrest confussed and in trouble, compared to the very few good punches Forrest landed. There is no way Foresst should have lead on one the judges' cards, let alone all of them! Especialy after getting a point deducted for a low blow! I agree with the chant of the crowd, the decision was BULL-$#*%!!!

AD - ZAN:  The decisions from the judges means IKE BAZOOKA QUARTEY did not fight FORREST alone but did fight with the judges too. If not, why didn't BAZOOKA win? How on earth can two arms fight eight - ten arms for the two arms to win? Even with that IKE proved he is still the BAZOOKA!!! This shows how cheaters boxing judges are. But to mine perfect knowledge IKE BAZOOKA QUARTEY won the fight. Ghanaians are still proud of Quartey the BAZOOOOOKA!!!!!!

Nelson Feliciano:  Harold Letterman says that the judges score on ring generalship, clean, effective punches, etc.. If he is correct, then how did the Viper win the fight? In the ring generalship department, it was all Ike (with the exception of about two or three rounds). Ike, being the smaller opponent, looked like the bigger, stronger man who pressured and got Forrest on the ropes many times. In the clean, effective punches department, the fight was close but with Ike winning the last round I thought the fight was his as well. Ike's jab landed way more than Vernon's did, and when Ike got Vernon on the ropes, Vernon looked frustrated by the clean punches he was eating. A rematch is warranted, in my opinion, since this fight truly left a bad taste in many people's mouths. Albeit, the fight was not an easy one to score, but scores like the ones I heard made me feel like a hometown fight... in Germany

Patrick:  Typical. There is no other word for it really. My personal scorecard had it 8-2 Quartay (admittedly there was 1 round where I wouldn't put up much of a fight if you gave it to Forrest, but that would still make it 7-3, plus the point deduction). When is this crap going to end? The only explanation is that the three blind mice were bought and paid for...how else could they score the fight like that? Another letdown by the judges.

B.Law:  what a fiasco, a farce. once again the judges rob a fighter who no doubt won the fight. Forrest just looks like a fighter with no confidence.

Al G:  Show the replay of the boxing match and let us hear the judges explanation for their scoring round by round. Something has got to be done with boxing judges otherwise they are going to ruin this great sport. The verdict was a disgrace and the judges should be made to account for their incompetences. Wake up dudes you are killing the sport. Bazooka Quartey, hold your head high you were better that Vernon Forrest\'s best and Vernon knows it himself . Don\'t go into a funk and be discouraged, train more and harder and get yourself another marquee opponent for a fight. In the words of Tina Turner "YOU ARE SIMPLE THE BEST" Al. G

Rob Nargine:  Forrest landed the cleaner punches throughout. How did you people not see that? And if you scored the fight 8-2 for Quartey, I can't take you seriously. You don't know how to score rounds. Regardless of who you think won, the fight was close, as the judge's cards show.

bk:  Seems we have three blind mice + Rob Nargine as the only ones who scored it for Vernon. Inconceivable that this fight could have gone to Forrest especially with the deducted point. Like Manny I'm still trying to digest the results of this one - no disrespect to Vernon because I actually like the guy but this is why many people give the hairy eyeball to boxing. Why watch when the result is already predetermined?

Es K:  anyone who gave this win to forrest need sum thick muffuckin glasses cuz that fool got pieced up, even had the right side of his face under his eye swolled up. Quarteys face looked untouched. that bout wasnt even close, like the majority of people posting. i had this goin 8-2 or 7-3 for quartey, an that 7-3 bein generous to forrest. if that aint enough for ya, just look back at the punch track numbers, forrest got dominated no question about it. all the real fans know who won, you cant fool an arena full of people tellin it like it is, strait up BULLSHIT. an to all the fake judges out there, yall scarin this sport up.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
