Although Panama was born in Panama, he was a classic New York gym rat.

Panama Lewis Zone

By Robert Ecksel

Boxing collects black eyes the way a philatelist collects stamps. Yet the world would have us believe that in the collective known as sport, boxing is a slut among pristine virgins. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. Basketball has tattooed cross-dressers. Baseball has pathological gamblers. Football has murderers. They break necks in hockey.

In the midst of so much mayhem, boxing doesn’t look that bad.

One of the times boxing looked bad was on June 16, 1983. That was the night up-and-coming welterweight Billy Collins Jr. fought journeyman Luis Resto in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Collins was seconded by his father and trainer Billy Collins Sr. Resto had Panama Lewis in his corner.

To the surprise of almost everyone, Resto beat Collins to within an inch of his life. The formerly good-looking prospect was a ruined man. After the fight, a suspicious Billy Collins Sr. asked that Resto’s gloves be impounded as evidence. The NYPD determined that the gloves had been tampered with. Most of the horsehair padding had been removed before the fight.

Lewis and Resto were tried, convicted and sentenced for assault, conspiracy, and possession of a deadly weapon. Resto served two years. Lewis did one. Panama Lewis was banned for life from the sport of boxing in the United States. Billy Collins died a year after the fight, drunk and despondent behind the wheel of a speeding car.

The boxing trainer Panama Lewis was born Carlos Humberto Lewis in the Panama Canal Zone and has been fighting forever.

“I was an amateur fighter in Panama and then I turned pro,” Lewis tells me. “I started off boxing in 1960, 118 pounds, bantamweight. I had twenty amateur fights, only lost once. Then I went to professional and I only lost once there too. I went into the U.S. Army in 1969 and got out in ‘71. I’m a disabled veteran. I met Eddie Gregory, known as Eddie Mustafa, and I hooked up with his trainer, Chickie Ferrara, and he taught me a lot. I met Mr. Ray Arcel in 1971.”

Ray Arcel was to pugilists what Siegfried and Roy were to big cats.

“I went on with Mr. Ray Arcel and I went on with Mr. Freddie Brown, because they both used to work together and they was training Roberto Duran. I have to give all blessing to God,” Lewis declares. “And the next man I have to give blessing to is Roberto Duran, because if it wasn’t for Roberto Duran, there wouldn’t be no Panama Lewis. He gave me the opportunity to work in the corner as the fourth man, to translate, and with that I learned. Plus I’m gifted to see things and move on. I’m a fast thinker. I’m a good motivator. The only man who could top me with that was a man named, God bless him, Bundini Brown.”

Drew “Bundini” Brown was the mirror in Ali’s corner who cast his good spell on Ali and his bad spell on Ali’s opponents.

“I knew Roberto Duran in Panama. I was in the family,” continues Lewis. “I was part of Duran’s family.”

I mention that Roberto Duran, in my opinion, was one of the greatest lightweights in history.

“Not one of them,” Lewis says. “He’s the only great lightweight champion whoever put his foot on the planet.”

I ask if he thinks Duran was better than Benny Leonard.

Panama Lewis smiles. “You know greatness when you see it,” he says. “Like when I had Aaron Pryor. He was the best 140-pounder ever done it. So I’m blessed to work with good fighters. I work with Mike McCallum. I work with Livingstone Bramble. I work with Camacho Sr. I had a chance also to train Michael Nunn. I gave him four defenses. I made Vito Antuofermo world champion. I did that. I can go on and on today with you naming great fighters, but all that’s saying is that you have to have a blessing from God. I am blessed with boxing. Even though they took away what I’m supposed to have - you understand? - I’ll get it back because they can’t stop that.”

There’s an old adage which says a trainer is only as good as his fighter. I ask Panama Lewis if that is true.

“I’ll put it this way,” he replies. “The trainer gotta be a teacher, to teach the fighter to show his greatness. But if you work with that fighter and the fighter look bad, you can look bad at the trainer. So is a double-whammy here. The trainer makes the fighter and the fighter makes the trainer, in a sense.”

Although Panama was born in Panama, he was a classic New York gym rat.

“I started off in the 149th and Third Avenue, Bobby Gleason’s Gym. That’s where I really started off,” Lewis says. “Then I went by a little gym over here, got to Stillman’s, traveled around to get boxing. I’m from the old school. But what I do, I mix the old school with the new school. You cannot bring the old school without mixing it with the new school. I don’t believe in a fighter leaving everything up to lifting weight. I don’t wanna hear what his strengthening coach gotta say. Back in the old days you go and rake grass, you chop trees down, you work hard in the gym and you spar. That weightlifting thing don’t work for every fighter. It works for some fighter, but not a skillful fighter.”

I ask Lewis to elaborate.

“You may have muscles,” the trainer says, “but muscles don’t win fights. The brain wins fights. That’s why a lot of fighter’s careers end up quick, because they’re not thinking fighters. Then you be talking with your tongue heavy. Know what I’m saying? This thing kills. But boxing is an art. Once you learn the art, you can go places. And you have to live clean. In a sense, that’s why George Foreman could a came back and did what he did. A lot of these fighters trying to do that, and they’re gonna get hurt, because they didn’t live the life George Foreman lived. I don’t think Holyfield is finished. I think he could fight still, but he can’t beat no great fighter or no young guy. He’s gotta look for somebody old like himself. I can’t speak for him, but if I was him, in his shoes, with the money he made, I wouldn’t be in the game today.”

Everyone agrees - everyone, that is, except Evander - that Holyfield should call it a day. I ask Lewis why he thinks the Real Deal - or any other fighter, for that matter, who fights past his prime - resists hanging ‘em up.

“What they miss is when they cross the street and people say: Here comes the champion. When you retire you don’t hear that. They miss that spotlight. They miss that crowd. They live for that. That is a big high for them.”

That may be a big high for them, but it can be a big low for the rest of us.

“He shouldn’t have fought no Larry Donald. I wouldn’t fight Larry Donald,” Panama Lewis says, “because he’s a stinker. He runs. He grabs. And if you beat Larry Donald you’re going nowhere. All you do is look stupid, like he did in the fight. So he fought the wrong fighter.”

Is there a top-ten fighter Holyfield can beat? What about WBO champ Lamon Brewster?

Panama Lewis makes a face: “Brewster is a champion because Wladimir Klitschko got no heart.”

Team Klitschko had several explanations for Wlad’s poor performance that night, blaming it on everything from Vaseline on the legs to poison in the water bottle.

“No, no, listen to me,” Lewis says excitedly. “Excuses. You’ve gotta bring heart to the game. He’s in condition, but he can’t take it, and he quit, gave up. There ain’t no excuses. So he should get out before he gets hurt. But he ain’t going to do it, because of the money they’re giving him. The brother, Vitali, at least comes to fight.”

Vitali Klitschko’s last fight was his demolition of Danny Williams.

“Danny Williams became famous because Mr. Mike Tyson’s leg got messed up. Trust me, if it weren’t for the leg, you wouldn’t be hearing no Danny Williams fighting no Klitschko. But things happen in the game when you’re thirty-eight. You leave the dressing room good, you try in that ring, and all the sudden your body go ‘whoop’ because of your age. I don’t wanna dog his victory,” Lewis says. “He beat Tyson because Tyson wasn’t Tyson that night. If the leg was good - you seen the fight - you know Williams wasn’t going no three, four rounds with Tyson.”

Panama Lewis has done it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. Under the circumstances, I wonder if he has mixed feelings about the sweet science.

“I’ve been in it for the last thirty-eight years and it’s all I know to do,” he says. “This is a blessing God gave me. That’s why nobody can take away what God gave me: the knowledge of the game. And I’m blessed in motivation. I could take a bad fighter and make him a good fighter, because I’m a teacher. There are few teachers left in the game, very few teachers left in the game, and I’m fortunate to be one of them.”

Panama Lewis, despite the odds, is standing at the final bell.

“You know what keep me grounded?” he asks. “That keep me going? A man named Jesus Christ. God keep me going. The bible keep me strong. Everybody in this world, except God, commits sins - understand? - Even the President of the United States. So who am I to talk? When they talk about me, I feel good because I’m still important. ‘Oh, Panama Lewis, he’s the one . . . ’ That make me famous still. When I don’t hear about Panama Lewis, then I worry. God gave me the gift to motivate. God gave me the gift to be a teacher in boxing. Not a trainer, a teacher. So that’s why good fighters come to me - because they want to learn how to fight. Being a trainer is more than putting on a towel and tell a man to give me three rounds, give me four rounds, give me five rounds. No. You got to teach your fighters. That’s what I’m gifted with. They can’t take that away from me.”

Tommy:  i cant believe he was not questioned about removing the padding from the gloves and ultimately costing billy collins his life or about the water bottle incident w pryor - arguello in the 1st fight- this guy should not only be banned from boxing in the us but banned from living period in the us- this guy is a disgrace plain and simple and i have no problem saying it
Tuesday Sep 26, 2006 12:49:00 AM
EH:  Tommy: He was banned from boxing for life in the U.S., although he still trains fighters overseas. I totally argree with your first statement though - why wasn't he asked about the removing of padding or the black bottle incidents? Agree with your last statement as well - he is a disgrace and I'll take it a step further and say I wish some real-life Tony Soprano type would whack him.

paula stewart:  What's courageous about cheating to win and taking a life in the process. What about an apology to the Collins family and all of boxing. And repentance Mr Panama, let me quote you the words of Jesus. Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand. Turn from your wicked ways....

Mike:  He was basically a POS that had to cheat to win. He is scum and ruined boxing for a lot of people. Billy Collins Jr. had a chance to be one of the greatest and some noname amateur boxer and POS trainer decided it was in their best interest to go ahead and ruin a boxer's life to win a $100 bet. They are the best examples of scum of the earth. Lewis and Reston will forever be known as the lowest lives on this planet. I hope they are miserable for the rest of their lives. As for Lewis giving boxing a reason to be watched-HA! What is being watched is Lewis' career being exploited with scandal. As well, it should be. He deserves credit for, at most, being the chewed gum stuck to the sole of someone's shoe. I hope the Collins' get every penny they deserve. RIP Billy Jr.

julius:  Panama Lewis cheated, his cheating led a kid to loose part of his eyesight, career and worse of all... hope. As a result the kid did something wrong, allegedly got drunk and got killed in a car. So much for Panama Lewsi legacy, tainted in red blood. Period.
Tuesday Apr 29, 2008 08:28:07 PM
glenn williams:  Look, anyone who defends this guy sould take a long hard look at that terrible picture of billy collins face after the resto fight. Eyes puffed shut and life ruined, let me quote Mr Panama himself, " I like it when people say Panama Lewis,oh he is the guy that did that. I only get worried when people dont talk about me." These are his words in the above interview, do you think he ever spared a thought for the damage he did to an innocent young man that night? He enjoys the publicity but its all fake, and he knows it. This man is scum

G E Malone:  Look people I don't even know the man nor have I ever met him. The man didn't make it this far for nothing. Give the man a break people give him room to breath the deeds as yall would call them has been done can't change the past so what he cheated (People makes mistakes in life and we learn from them but he did not put any gun to anyones head and pull the trigger sure Collins was a good kid but Panama shouldn't be held accountable for that mans death what Panama cause to that man happened inside the ring and not in a car accident although my heart go's out to the Collin's Family It's tough love and a harsh reality out here we all know Collin's was drinking and driving there are rules we must follow had he got caugth by law enforcement it would of saved his life the point I'm making is that Panama was caugth and he's faced the consequences pretty sure he thinks about it all the time this man is no animal no man should burn in hell for eternity I for give him ) I'm sure he wasn't the first and he's not going to be the last.

Hector:  You low life's sit here and throw dirt on a man u truly no nothing about.panama lewis is a great man, gifted and spiritul person....who was not found guilty but had to take the fall for Being his trainer and the boxer that had the pading in gloves knew who truley re padded the gloves .and currently speaking is living a horrible life for trying to destroy a great man's legacy.and now he is stooping to a whole new level .coming out with a documetary filled with more lies then tupac and biggie murder (r.I.p)but I guess that's what keep the world twirling..... to all u nay sayer's get a life...and in rememberance of "the greastest enterainer the world will ever witness"look at the man or woman in the mirror, make that change... now that's something to blog about! R.I.P arturo gatti. Ohh and yeah almost forgot, panama lewis also trained the young gatti in jersey city .do your research! The list goes on and on suckers! R.I.p. michael jackson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People never know what they truly got to it's gone!
Sunday Jul 12, 2009 09:53:19 PM
really:  Really, then why did Luis Resto nearly a quarter of a century later come clean & confess that it was Panama Lewis that not only illegally tampered with his gloves before the Collins Jr fight, but also knowingly padded his hands with plaster. Even Luis has admitted that this haunts him every day of his life, however Panama has never owned up to the awful sins he committed & probably never will. I hope he suffers for his ungodly sins! RIP Arturo Gatti
Saturday Jul 18, 2009 01:04:52 AM
Reality:  All the defenders of Panama Lewis make me sick, talk about forgiveness for a man that has never, ever admitted fault for knowingly removing the padding from his fighters gloves and wrapping his hands with plaster. Forgiveness is there for someone who shows regret and admits fault, but for Panama Lewis and his constant denial in any wrongdoing just assures that he is a horrible person.. All the talk about spirituality and god is just an act to help him sleep at night. also i find it almost ironic that one of his defenders quotes a known child molester in defending a convicted criminal.. 6 years wasn't enough for Panama.

BK:  I consider myself a student of the boxing game, I watch fighters, listen to trainers/coaches and read as much literature on boxing that I can find. There is no-doubt ,regardless of your like or dislike for Panama Lewis he is a great trainer and has proven so over the years. It was unfortunate what happened to Billy Collins, my heart goes out to his family, there was obvious foul play involved but we must understand the desire and thirst to win at all costs that men and women are plagued with everyday and when an opportunity presents itself and he/she dosen't think they will get caught -they will pursue. I'm not advocating for cheating or malicious but just expressing human nature. Until next time- peace be unto and walk good BK

Matt:  I think its hilarious that all the people who have defended Panama Lewis on this website have the grammar of a third grader. It is pretty obvious, through the admissions of Luis Resto and his conviction in court, that Lewis tampered with the gloves in the Collins fight. Furthermore, Resto also admitted that Panama wrapped his hands using plaster of Paris. If you throw in the accusations of spiking the water bottles in the Resto/Collins fight and the Pryor/Arguello fight, it is pretty clear to see the Lewis is a cheater. Regardless of what you people who defend him say, this is the legacy that Lewis will take to the grave. Panama Lewis: A liar and a cheat.
Tuesday Aug 4, 2009 08:40:36 AM
Anonymous user:  Because of him doing that, thats the same thing Antonio Margarito did to Miguel Cotto.
Tuesday Aug 4, 2009 12:55:03 PM
lorenzoshaw:  You guys defending Lewis obviously do not know him at all. You say he is spiritual and good, but he has always hung around drug dealers, gangsters and anyone else with connections to illegal money. The man lies constantly and it is easy to catch him in a lie as he will contradict himself moments later. The man won't answer a question without being paid cash upfront. He drops the name of Jesus Christ only when he thinks it makes him look good. He has never shown any sympathy or emotion for Collins or Resto who both had their lives ruined by this man, but he claims he cries inside for them. He tells Resto he is like a son to him, and when Resto cried in front of him about the desperate state his life was in, and the guilt that was eating him up, Lewis just said he cries inside for him and feels for him. Later he made fun of him and laughed behind his back. Lewis also has not achieved anything worth bragging about in his career. Duran was already a well trained fighter before Lewis ever met him. All the up and coming fighters that he ever trained on his own ultimately fell short of any notable accomplishment despite all of Lewis's well known cheating. Lewis was convicted and sentenced to six years. Others have previously stated what Resto has about both the gloves and the stimulants. Lewis is a low life thug and belongs in the streets. Why people keep giving this guy cash for interviews is a mystery to the world of boxing
Tuesday Aug 4, 2009 05:45:48 PM
Anonymous user:  Lewis Panama has no guts. Im goin to do you right he tells Resto. Panama has all that jewelry and the ridiculous grill. What a fake. Panama is about himself. No guts, coward. Resto who knew that the gloves where tampered with said nothing. But yet still 25 years later Resto has a hard time confronting this POS Panama. The collins family need to sue Lewis civil suit. They won't get nothing but make his life hell.

TrickyTroy:  It is a sad day when a slimeball(I'm not going call him what I really want to) is still living a descent life, and destroyed 2 others lifes completly. However, with recent event ( CEOs, Investment firms, and banks) I guess it is the American way. I wish Panama and Resto could get in the ring and box each other for the time limit billy did with Panama having billys gloves and Restro had what he wear the night of the fight. But knowing Panama he'll weasel out of it some how. We need to start a petition to elimante Panama's invovlement in boxing in every shape and form. Panama Trains you your Banned for life sounds good to me.

daqueen:  I just watched on television for the first time resto the boxer, he wanted everyone to know the real story of whatr really happen the night of the fight with collins. it was very sad to see a grown man cry. i was not there but i believe his story.when you are dealing with powerful people it is hard to be heard or even taken seriously.i feel that the collins family should have been able to recieve some benefits from one of the agency that they sued .once they found out the gloves had been tampered with. this reminds me of the world in which we live. if you are poor ,them the big man can walk all over you. the first thing they want to say is that the poor people only wants to sue because they are poor ,and not even think about any of their loses. i had a sister die by wrongful death, but because i didnt have a lot of money and could not obtain a good lawyer there was no case. and the company is still in standing right to this day, they did not even get a smack on the rist.so i kind of understand what the collins family is going through.and i send my deepest regret..

Drew S.:  Panama lewis is more slippery than fish grease. Any body that believes any of his bs is probably a prostitute. In assualt in the ring resto couldnt even look lewis in the eyes and kept his head down the whole time! In there first encounter resto looked at the floor the whole time! Lewis is a master manipulator of words and minds. Its amazing that no one else has came forward in a quarter century and spoke up on the tampered gloves. If some one else did it as lewis claims wtf would they not come forward! anybody greezy enough to take out padding to win bet $$$ sure enough is greezy enough to come forward 25 years later to capitalize on this travesty. Panama tampers with gloves, plasterizes handwraps or at least knows about it, and mixes magical ellixers in his water bottles-caught on camera! if any body in this forum believes in lewis's innocence than i suggest you go get a costco box of condoms&warm sensations lube, a gallon of hand sanitizer for bathing in, get your nails and hair done, post some adds on craigslist put ten toes to the curb and hit the track because you are a straight bitch!
Thursday Aug 13, 2009 12:17:56 PM
Peligroso :  First of all resto has no balls cause what he had to do was smack panama like the bitch he is for pulling that bs in the collins fight and then playing stupid. But also I believe resto is either slow or has mental health issues because of the way he let's another man manipulate him and punk him. Its better to live one day as a lion than a thousand days as a lamb, that being said and I'm not saying I'm more man than the next one but believe me had it been me in resto's place first I would've never been a part of some scheme like that to cheat and ruin another fighters life second I would've ended up taking a repeat trip to prison but for sure panama wouldn't have smiling anymore with them cheesy 10k gold fronts, but at least id be able to look at my self in the mirror and live with myself. Talk is cheap I know but being a 2x ny golden glove fighter and having done time myself I don't think I would've had trouble backin up what I'm saying. But in the end the way I look at it every dog as its day and chicken boil in there own broth cause that's exactly what batman and robin are (lewis/resto) two chickens for pulling a cowardly stunt like they did. Shame on anybody that would involve or vouch for panama lewis, resto I cut some slack cause he ain't the brightest bulb. Amen

Bryan:  Panama Lewis is a piece of trash.
Wednesday Aug 19, 2009 05:42:55 PM
TKBrown:  Panama Lewis is less than a man. I watched the Documentary on HBO,"Assault in the Ring" and that was pretty messed up how he did Luis Resto. Resto lied about somethings, but I think he lied because he was afraid of Panama.Panama was foul for what he said in that bar scene when dude and him were talking about Resto's first visit to MIAMI. Resto did handle him well when he went to Miami to see him, but that last time he did him better than I would have done him. I'm just glad that he is now overcoming the situation and can move on with his life.
Saturday Aug 22, 2009 08:23:21 AM
CYS:  I just watched the HBO documentary with my 13 year old son that discussed the unfortunate fight between Collins and Resto. It was a great teachable moment with respect to those who lie, cheat and the consequences that follow. I hope that at some point, Mr. Lewis will confess to what took place (prior to the fight beginning) and apologize to the Collins family. Their decision to cheat based on greed and pride destroyed many lives.....an extremely unfortunate incident.
Friday Aug 28, 2009 06:10:41 PM
glenn williams:  Panama will never do that, he is crazy and totally 100 per cent in denial, Resto? I have spent 10 years hating him, but yes, it did take courage to admit what he did, he is lucky in many ways, okay you spent 10 years living in a hole but you have two healthy honest and strong sons, stop crying Resto. You destroyed a mans life, and sorry my friend, you were a shit boxer, thats why you put bricks in your gloves, why not get over your delusion of being a half decent lying cheat and become an honest chef?

Not Hip To The Hype
"Haye has said that without the hype, boxing is boring. This tells you something about him as a fighter and as a man. And maybe something about his low expectations of his own value as a fighter. Why isn't his skill good enough? Which audience is he trying to impress? When I watch fights, I watch the contest, the skill, the drama, the match-up. Screw the circus hype."---TSS reader Mortcola, giving thumbs down on David Haye and his pre-fight antics
