Back After 19 Months, Bute Smashes Di Luisa

Lucian Bute fought for the first time in 19 months, meeting Andrea Di Luisa in Quebec, the main event on a PBC/NBC Sports Network show Saturday night.

Bute was promising and built smartly, but then ran into ruffian Brit Carl Froch a couple years ago, and that sapped his momentum. A win here would be a start in a surge to get some buzz back. He delivered; a left dropped DL in the fourth. He got up, ate flurries and his corner threw in the towel after Bute basted him.

To be fair, DL looked small and in over his head a bit, so this fight was fine as a rust shedder for the victor.

Bute went 64-158 to 35-205 for the Italian.

The end came at 1:53 of the fourth. After, the winner spoke to Kenny Rice. Bute said he is back, and liked watching his power shot which dropped the loser. He said that Adonis Stevenson came to his dressing room to wish him well before. He was not asked about what’s next.

The 31-2 lefty, age 35, was born in Romania and calls Canada home. The 17-2 DL is 33.

In the first, Bute showed himself to be on a higher plane. In the second, more Bute. In the third, Bute clanged one-twos, and then added the uppercut. To round four..Bute went to the body, snapped a jab, and the underdog, who looked a weight class smaller, showed a cross-arm D. Then he hit the deck, off a left. He was up at six…Then Bute hopped on him. The corner threw in the towel…

Easy work for the home towner…

As expected, Bute did his job after a few minutes of sparring. Look I understand Bute needed a confidence builder. But as a sellable fight on PBC, give me a break. This fight should have been buried deep on an undercard somewhere as an eight round opening fight (a walk in fight so to say). Haymon knows Bute is damaged goods but still a huge draw in Montreal. I think he is setting up a fight between Bute and Chavez Jr. with the winner getting Stevenson. No lose for Haymon and he gets big fights with big attention (and money of course) either way. That said, in my opinion neither Bute, Chavez Jr or Stevenson last 3 rounds with Kovalev. So its like they are fighting for the Triple A Championship for those baseball fans out there.

Agree, but Stevenson - win, lose or draw - might last (or run) for a bit more than 3 rounds. Can't imagine Bute asking for Sergey; even after this last predictable/easy performance. Beterbiev - if anyone is - is Kovalev's Huckleberry; just as much as he would most like destroy Bute, Chavez, and probably Adonis too. :) :)

Gimmie Bute versus Yunieski Gonzalez. Gonzalez deserves another shot on TV versus a name (albeit damaged goods fighter) and if Bute is in fact back, this would be the formidable fighter that could provide that proof. How feasible it is, I am not completely sure. However, if Bute comes to fight and boxes with some of the skill that he used to show, it could be an interesting scrap.

Bute is not ready for the animal that is Gonzalez who I had beating Pascal, barely in a fantastic fight.. Bute needs a good two solid opponents to tune up on as Gonzalez never stops coming forward.. Why has Bute been off for so long? I dont understand how any boxer or athlete would ever think 19 months off is a good idea unless they are healing an injury

Bute better stick with the same level of competition in his next fight. He appeared to be very tentative like a mountain goat with acrophobia. He finally found his Grove but he still looks like he's got another layer of rust to shed. Put him in with Cloud. If he doesn't get a KO within ten, he's not ready.

Why did Bute go to Lt Heavy rather than stay at SuperMiddle! Doesnt make sence! Too much competition at Lt Heavyweight! Not a serious Pilgrim!
