Garcia Gives UP WBC 140 Belt

Danny Garcia admitted that making 140 isn’t really doable for him, so he told the WBC to give his belt to someone else. The sanctioning body announced they want Viktor Postol and Lucas Matthysse to clash for it.

Here is the release the WBC sent out regarding the situation. Note the interesting mention of the assessment to be done of the proper weight class for Garcia to be campaigning in. That’s something new for me…

Danny Garcia spoke to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and after a very emotional conversation, agreed to relinquish his Green and Gold belt. The World Boxing Council has declared the WBC super lightweight title vacant. Danny’s weight situation forced his decision to fight at welterweight and confirmed his physical ability to compete in that division while assessing the possibility of returning to 140 pounds.

The WBC is ordering Victor Postol to fight Lucas Matthysse for the WBC super lightweight championship. Postol has been the division’s mandatory contender and had registered with the WBC a step aside agreement with several provisions, all of which were complied with to his benefit, and since the Postol-Garcia fight will not happen, then Postol will fight Matthysse, who won the right by beating Ruslan Provodnikov, and the fight will be for the WBC undisputed super lightweight championship.

Garcia conquered the WBC title by defeating the legendary Erik Morales and made impressive title defenses against Morales and Amir Khan. The highlight of his career was the 2013 Fight of the Year when he defeated then-WBC interim champion Matthysse .

Garcia has competed in over-the-weight fights and has notified the WBC of his concern in making the 140-pound limit. The WBC will coordinate a specific medical study of body mass composition to be performed at UCLA to determine the division in which he is safe to fight .

The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of honoring Danny Garcia with the designation of Champion Emeritus, which will allow him to perform his medical tests and should he be cleared to fight in the super lightweight division, he will have the right to challenge for the championship.

After a very emotional convo= Garcia was crying when Sulaiman told him that he was sick of tsAH's crap and was letting two boxers that deserve it ,fight for the belt. Good for the WBC! get that man in the division he belongs.

Right on! La Maquina! ...oh, gee, Matthysse is with Golden Boy now, so...looks like the fight will on HBO!

-Bernie Campbell :

This guy gotta go! When he loses a round or is low on momentum, he is more than likely ready to hit into the nuggets of his opposition...I cant tell you how many times I witnessed it with clownie! Put him in with Thurman eventually!

As soon as I saw this thread's title I immediately thought . . ""wow D2, BC and a few others are going to have a real tear up on this"". Can't say much else about this than what has already been said. @D2; yep, love the suggestion that Danny was crying; wet boxing trunks and all. But, the real question may be, where was Sulaiman as Garcia split his guts and tears about no longer being able to be an over/catch-weight champion? On his knees with a round shaped mouth or what? Or did he have Oscar's fish nets out for the occasion? :) :)

One reader on Bad Left Hook wanted to console Danny Garcia by reminding him that he still holds the lineal, unified Dannyweight title. : ) Thanks Al Haymon!

Danny's mind has not been the same since the MH fight. Only to follow with the Salka fight critics and fan backlash. I think Danny would have been better off losing the title to MH like a real man and fighter. to make things worst he should of given MH the rematch, to silence the critics and keep fans happy, but he chose not to and know he can't handle the pressure/mind games as we saw in the Peterson fight . Haymon sees it and want to match him with paulie.

That is right, riverside. Garcia would have the love of the boxing fans if he rematches Herrera. Now he is trying to fight retired Paulie in a no win situation. Let Garcia fight Thurman ,Broner or Brook and see what happens. The kid can't even have a home coming fight in his hometown of Philly. He has to pretend he is from Puerto Rico and those boxing people are smart and rejected him.

I would really like to know the reason why Garcia (and Haymon for that matter) insisted on holding onto that title as long as possible with obviously no intention of ever heading back to down to 140. And they even paid off Postol in April to step aside and gave him a nice additional paycheck as well to fight on the undercard. I agree that Garcia's mindset has not been the same since the Herrera fight. Haymon did see that afterward and got him a set up fight against Salka to try to boost his confidence. The Malignaggi fight is also about getting Garcia's confidence back as well as adding a name and ticket seller in Brooklyn. I also think Haymon is featuring Thurman and Garcia on ESPN as a prelude to a matchup between the two later this year or early next year.
