Provodnikov-Matthysse

HOW THEY PICK ‘EM: MEDIA EXPERTS PROVIDE THEIR THOUGHTS ON MATTHYSSE VS. PROVODNIKOV

THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 18 FROM TURNING STONE RESORT CASINO IN VERONA, NEW YORK TELEVISED LIVE ON HBO BOXING AFTER DARK®

LOS ANGELES (April 17) – Members of the media are making their predictions and providing analysis for who will take the win in the sure-fire “Fight of the Year” candidate bout between former World Champions Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse and “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov.

Though all agreed Matthysse vs. Provodnikov will be a “fun-to-watch,” “action-packed” bout and “all-out war” in the ring, one thing was clear: Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse is favored to take the win on April 18.

Here’s what they had to say:

MICHAEL WOODS, The Sweet Science:

“Trading. Tit for tat. Back and forth. Ebb. Flow. And I think the Siberian Rocky gets the nod, with a couple knockdowns of The Machine.”

TIM DAHLBERG, Associated Press:

“Matthysse by TKO in what should be a slugfest. This is a fight that could easily go either way, but believe Matthysse will land the bigger punches.”

LYLE FITZSIMMONS, CBS Sports.com:

“Something’s gotta give. Matthysee will swing until an official intervention. Provodnikov will come forward through anti-tank fire. The winner will either be able to impose his will on the other, or have a varied enough game to change the dynamics. The guess here is that Matthysse at least has the latter, if not the former. Matthysse W 12.”

STEVE KIM, UCNLive.com:

“In what should be one of the best fights of 2015, if not recent years, I think we’ll see a back-and-forth battle between two of the best action fighters in the sport. And in a war of attrition, I believe it will be the superior strength and size of Provodnikov that will come out victorious after 12 fast-paced and violent rounds.”

ROBERT MORALES, Los Angeles Newspaper Group:

“I’m going to take Matthysse by late-round TKO. I just think he’s the better fighter, and he is definitely the harder puncher.”

ABRAHAM NUDELSTEJER, La Opinión:

“Matthysse, by KO in the 10th round.”

LANCE PUGMIRE, The Los Angeles Times:

“I expect the overall boxing skill of Lucas Matthysse to carry him to victory over the hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov. In a bout that will likely fulfill expectations of a slugfest, it’s in Matthysse’s interest to limit those exchanges and rely on a more universal skill set. By doing so, Matthysse should escape a classic by decision.”

MICHAEL ROSENTHAL, The RING Magazine:

“Fun, fun fight. I love Provodnikov’s fighting spirit but Matthysse has the same spirit and superior skills. I think the Argentine will get the better of inevitable firefights; wear Provodnikov down and either become the first to stop the Russian or win a clear decision. Matthysse by unanimous decision.”

BOB VELIN, USA Today:

“Matthysse by eighth-round TKO. This should be a slugfest for the ages. Toe-to-toe for as long as it goes and a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate before it even starts. Matthysse gets the edge because I believe he’s got a bit more going in the boxing skills department than Provodnikov.”

BRIAN CAMPBELL, ESPN.com:

“Matthysse is clearly more skilled. But this one is going to come down to who has more will. And the brutally tough and durable Provodnikov has few peers in this regard. Look for this one to live up to expectations as an all-out war.”

Due to the unprecedented demand to see this surefire “Fight of the Year” candidate ringside seats sold out in only 15 minutes – and the entire event is now near sellout with Turning Stone Resort Casino releasing the last group of tickets in the $35 and $25 price range. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Turning Stone Resort Box Office at 315-361-7469 or online at Ticketmaster.com.

Doors are currently scheduled to open at 6:00 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 6:50 p.m. ET. The live HBO Boxing After Dark split-site doubleheader telecast begins at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.

-Skibbz :

How I see it going is Matthysse trying to box Ruslan but getting caught at some stage in the first round or early second. As soon as that happens Ruslan will jump on him and Matthysse will cover up with his ear muffs and look for a spot to counter, but Ruslan's heavy blows will be raining down on him, with each fist after fist that strikes his gloves and drums his head Matthysse will be edging closer to the war that Ruslan has come knocking for... And when they enter that game of stakes Ruslan will be the last man standing. It will come down to force of will and the physical toughness of each man. No doubting that Lucas, the self styled machine, is tough - he has shown his toughness enough in big fights but he has been hurt and he has touched the canvas, and because of that when the monstrous punching Mansi Mauler, the Siberian Rocky, comes knocking I can only see him falling into the embrace of the Referee as the fight is called to an end. I really hope the ref doesn't let a massacre take place tomorrow night, I want to see both these warriors and champions healthy on Sunday morning.

-Radam G :

The Siberian Rocky is my pick. The "Machine" has too many kinks in his armor. And he is simple, not slick. TSR is going to be on him like a thousand-and-one ticks. With the scrap ending in the early mid rounds, the Machine is going to look like he was busted up by a 1,001 blood-red bricks. Holla!

-spit bucket :

I'm with Skibbiz on this one, Ruslan takes it on sheer grit, power, determination, and will. And I too hope they're both unhurt after the fight.

I am leaning towards Lucas, but it also crossed my mind that no one gets permanent damage, we all know there will be some damage !

-Pazuzu :

Less than 48 hours! Getting in to Verona tonight! Prediction for the fight? Pain.

-MCM :

Matthysse all the way. Matthysse has fought and beat the best whereas Ruslan has only fought the best. And, Ruslan has looked slower in each of his last couple fights; I'm afraid he's not aging well. Matthysse all the way.

-Skibbz :

Ruslan should be an undefeated TWO weight world champion. But because he hails from a snow covered siberian village in the middle of nowhere with no he's easy to rob. I think he's going to get some Hagler meanness inside of him real soon... Let his fists be his guarentors.

-amayseng :

Can't make a decision tho I know it will be one for the ages

-riverside :

We can't wait, it's gonna be a classic and I'm not the one selling the fight!! I can see Lucas taking the earlier rounds, trying to box and fight, but Ruslan is going to be all over him and will start wearing him down. The million dollar question is Can Mathysee handle the pressure? we got to remember, all the Mathysee fights, Lucas is the one pressing the fight. My verdict Ruslan takes him out in the later rounds.

It will change once Ruslan finds a few connections and the toll of those heavy hands start making Lucas that bit more cautious.. And then Ruslan will bully him into submission!!! Both guy's weighed in under the limit, Lucas 139lb and Provo 139.5lb!!! ITS ON! This could be the card of the year... :D

We are with team Provo let make the MH vs Ruslan rematch happen be an honor to make skibbz. Team Herrera☝️

I meant meet skibbz

-ultimoshogun :

My only prediction is one of these guys is getting KO'd. I can see a scenario where the Russian wears him down and stops Matthysse, but I can also see Matthysse clipping him with a KO left hook like he did to Lamont Peterson.

-stormcentre :

If Algieri can keep Ruslan at bay with a busted and/or blown up face (I am not saying Chris won) then conventional wisdom says that Matthysse should be able to do better. But that's just conventional wisdom. If Provodnikov has somehow lifted his technical game and shows more desperation, that may tip the result in his favour. Particularly if it becomes a war of attrition and punch resistance. If Lucas can keep the fight long and land his power from distance, he should get it. If Provodnikov's face holds out and he can keep the fight short, and land his power from there, he should get it. My crystal ball is not that clear today and unfortunately it resembles a junkyard dog's cloudy eye if I try and peer any deeper into the future for a more detailed result.

Got u ultimo!! Looking forward to a great fight. Lucas hit Danny on the chin, mouth piece flew like 10 row up the stand, either Danny has an enormous hard chin? I don't know what the alternative? Can ruslan take Lucas best shots? Somebody is getting knock out for sure!! I just see Ruslan taking the hard shot and Lucas folding. Looks like we will get lucas for sure if wins and oscars will work with banner to get Ruslan next, looking for a big fight next for MH, hoping everything pans out good either way.

-King Beef :

Gotta go with Matty on this 1, both guys have had there armor kinked a bit, but I think Lucas will be able to box better if needed whereas Provo only seems to know one direction..straight ahead; and that straight ahead is gonna run him into harder punches than Algieri's and Bradley's this time. should be a good 1 either way!

-the Roast :

If this fight was the co-main event with Floyd/Manny I might consider dropping 100 bucks on the HDPPV. This fight is a coin flip. That's what makes it great. These guys are going to come together and bang. If one hits the other with the big shot anything can happen. I think Matthysse is the superior fighter, more versatile and what not (for you RG). Matthysse is the bigger puncher and Provodnikov will get caught coming in because that's all he knows how to do. Come forward face first. I don't see Ruslan as a big puncher, more of a volume guy. Provodnikov gets stopped late due to cuts and swelling. On the other hand Lucas has been down twice vs Molina and once vs Garcia so anything can happen. That is why I will be standing erect in front of my TV tomorrow night. This fight is what we all crave. This could be Corrales-Castillo all over again.

"This could be Corrales-Castillo all over again" Excellent comparison!, wonder if either one will have enough senses left to spit out the mouthpiece to buy some time.

My money would be on Matthysse to spit the piece and roar back from the brink.

-Yogo :

'Standing erect in front of my TV.' I hope you'll have the curtains drawn there Roast. ;) I wouldn't even dare try to call this one, it's going to be epic brutality. Can't wait.

-redox :

I've got Ruslan by stoppage.

-oubobcat :

I'll be in the arena tonight and must say this is by far the most excited I have been to attend a fight. As for a prediction, well I keep changing my mind. The one certain is that it will be a great fight and one of which could go down in history as an all time great. Provodnikov is so relentless and determined. A big key for him is to focus on a consistent body attack early. I think his best shot to win is in the later rounds and to do so he must break down Matthysse. And in order to do so a consistent body attack early is needed. Lets not forget that Provodnikov was hurt by Timothy Bradley. And Bradley is not a big puncher by any means. But Provodnikov was also in an all out war in that fight and should when hurt he could fight through severe adversity. He also showed tremendous determination in breaking down and beating Mike Alvarado. Matthysse can punch and we all know that. There is one punch power in both hands. If Bradley could hurt Provodnikov then certainly Matthysse can do so as well. But when Matthysse faced adversity against Danny Garcia (eye swelling shut) he did not respond well. He was winning the fight up until the eye blew up and did not respond well at all. If Provodnikov's eyes swell, it doesn't faze his determination to win. But Matthysse determination was not the same against Danny Garcia when his eye began closing. One observation from the weigh in on my part. I thought Matthysse looked strong and Provodnikov looked a little drawn. After Matthysse weiged in, he played to the crowd. Provodikov got off those scales and started gulping down water. I was just starting to think Provodnikov until after I saw them yesterday. I don't know who wins but its going to be a lot of fun tonight to watch.

-Pazuzu :

Matthysse in the casino entry hall now, sitting in a cafe with his crew. Talking to fans, shaking hands. Looks fit and relaxed.

-Skibbz :

What I really love about this fight is that back when Ruslan was beating up kids in Russia, Matthysse was giving out the same treatment to young pugs in Argentina. Now their parallel lives have crossed in the biggest fight of either guys life. It's going to be spectacular!!!
