Golovkin-Rubio Numbers Are Out; 1,304,000 Watched Live

The Golovkin was against released, and Marco Antonio Rubio was the latest victim to be swallowed up by the beastly talent from Kazahkstan, on Saturday night in Carson, CA, and on HBO. Now, the numbers have been released as well, and a source tells us the Nielsens are having the suits at HBO feeling satisfied.

Golovkin’s 18th straight KO attracted 1,304,000 viewers to the live, first time airing on the premium cabler. That number makes it the second best performing scrap on cable TV this year. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Brian Vera’s rematch drew 1,390,000 viewers, back in March.

HBO has put on 13 of the 15 top performers on cable this year, and this outing represents a 33% jump for Triple G from his last outing, against Daniel Geale.

Phenomenal numbers. That's about the same figure Andre Ward drew against Edwin Rodriguez and a huge increase over his last fight against Daniel Geale. Of course, TV ratings don't necessarily translate to PPV buys but I do think this is starting to shape up as a viable pay-per-view telecast. If anything, the fight would draw good numbers. But I say save it for PPV.

It stands to reason that GGG is picking up in viewership. As climbs his popularity, so will climb the viewership. I think we all agree the guy is a beast against the likes of Gabe Rosado, Daniel Geale, Curtis Stevens, Marco Antonio Rubio and others like them. The question is, how will he do against the best around? Against either Floyd Mayweather or Andre Ward? My guess is, $$$May's track record says he will not go near GGG. If he hasn't climbed into the ring against Manny Pacquiao in all these years, there is NO WAY he'll get in against GGG. That leaves Andre Ward. GGG has said he will fight Ward. He is on the record with that. I'd love to see Ward get back into training, have himself a comeback fight (he has been inactive one year), then face GGG in a PPV spectacular in mid-2015, after GGG has disposed of his rumored next opponent, Martin Murray, in February. Yes, PPV spectacular. Charge me whatever you want, Cablevision (my local system). I shell out $50 and up for everything else you throw at me. I would gladly pay whatever your asking price wilol be for GGG v Andre Ward. Just the thought of it is thrilling! -Randy G.

These are phenomenal numbers indeed. Golovkin's star is very quickly rising. I also agree that big HBO numbers won't necessarily mean big PPV numbers just yet either. Golovkin is rising but not yet ready to headline on his own on PPV. But with the right name opponent he would draw very well. The problem, I don't see any of those name opponents stepping in with him yet. He's too big a risk for too little a reward. At least for the first part of 2015 and maybe even the entire year, we are going to continue to see Golovkin in with the solid but overmatched foes. Martin Murray probably gets the February fight and my guess is afterward Golovkin fights the winner of Korobov-Lee (HBO will make it well well worth the while for either of those two). After that, I think a major push will be made by Golovkin's team and HBO to make a mega fight for late in the year. The question will be will any of the names step up to the plate.

In The first video from a few months ago , Ward says GGG's team doesn't want it but he thinks Chavez Jr does want it, but at this time Wards promoter can't do business with Arum. I love Ward but GGG hasn't ducked anyone and stays busy taking any fights he can while Ward is in legal limbo. Ward needs to get active and put his legal troubles behind him. In the second video from 11 months ago, Ward stays classy and says GGG is a good fighter but he is not a big star yet and is being force fed to the public. He can look at it that way because he earned it. It's also clear to see GGG has grown In popularity , and fans will fill arenas just to watch him knock out -5000 opponents. Who is more exciting to watch? Who can sell more seats? I think GGG should have a chance to clean out his division. If the other guys hold the belts hostage then it is what it is but big money has a funny way of changing things. Ward cleaned out his division and I don't see him calling out Kovalev,Hopkins, Stevenson. Let's see how it plays out but GGG is fighting 4 times a year while Ward is busy talking to Eli seckback and not getting in the ring. It can be super fight next year if both guys are able to fight.

Shadow only scratched the surface with those videos... GGG's promoter K2's Greg Loeffler and Coach Able have stated many reasons why GGG shouldn't fight Ward. But GGG can be found in a vid introducing himself to Ward at a press conference ( hoping to promote a fight between them) But its Ggg's management who don't feel GGG isnt ready and they have said so many times...that's the reason GGG never mentions Ward anymore after fights... He's been ordered not to discuss Ward after Ward said he would accept GGG's offer. The fighter isn't worried The management is.

Round of applause for the one and only Brownsugar. You're absolutely right. His management knows EXACTLY what time it is. And here's the thing that's so crazy to me. They hide behind the claim that Ward is not a draw. Yet the facts say he does fine gates in the Bay and his last fight against Rodriguez drew 1.3 million viewers. GGG is a fighter. I'm sure he would fight a lion. But his handlers? They would rather get sodomized by an angry Mike Tyson before throwing their rising star -- and future cash cow -- to Andre Ward.
