Promoter DiBella Releases Hamer After Fighter Quits On Stool, Via Twitter!

Ruiz Hamer weighin 131123 001a 2404cNYC heavyweight Tor Hamer quit on his stool after round three of his fight in Macao against Andy Ruiz, on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios card, which ran Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view; and if that wasn't enough of a bummer, Hamer was given a pink slip by his promoter right after, via social media.

Hamer started out fine, landing a couple clean rights on the Cali-based boxer. But by the third, body shots had sapped Hamer (on the right, with Ruiz on left, in Chris Farina-Top Rank photo) and he went back to his corner, and told his trainer he was done. He'd done the same thing, staying on his stool after round four against Czar Glazkov on Dec. 22, 2012.

Hamer's promoter, Lou DiBella, was in no mood for rationalizing, or bringing up the fact that another heavyweight who fought in NY, Magomed Abdusalamov, is comatose after a Nov. 2 bout. “That is an embarrassment @TorHamer,” DiBella Tweeted. “Time to become a pilot. Sorry to the fans. That is not (DiBella Entertainment.)” He followed that with, “By the way, Tor, you are released.”

I followed up with Dibella, making sure this wasn't a jest, or an intern took over his Twitter, or he regretted his action. Was he serious? “Absolutely,” he said. “Did you really doubt it?” No, I admitted, I didn't in th least.

Hamer, age 30, has a 21-3 record. The Penn State grad turned pro in 2008.

Were these guys fighting for a version of the WBO? Hamer looked I was watching the fight with a couple of his brethren from Gleason's, he has talent it's a shame he lacks heart.

Hamer is a disgace... Quitting on a guy who makes Butterbean look like a bodybuilder. Strange times we are living in ....when at least half a dozen of the top heavyweight contenders are borderline obese or grossly overweight I don't blame Hamers' promoter for giving him his walking papers.

The heavyweight contenders are that way nowadays because thay don't have to fight near-in-shape heavies from that pseudo-division of cruiserweight. Plus money in all division nowadays discourage the great fighters from coming up in weight. In long ago yesteryears, everybodee and dey momma were coming up to heavy to make the big bucks. Fatties and tallies use to get beat down or no chance to fight, because boxing was also about being sexy, so not too many "_____ got a shot after the late "Two-ton" Tony Galeto. That is why the powers that be made the late Buster Mathis lose 60-plus pounds as a pro to get a shot at the heavyweight's big money. In the amateurs, he was 300lbs when he twice defeated the late, great Smokin' Joe Frazier. But when Poppa Joe smoked him in the pros for the NYSAC heavyweight, he was down to 245lbs. The powers that be let Mathis have 10 additional pounds for his dance with GOAT Ali. When Mathis died in 50s, he was over 700lbs according to reports. I hear that the retired Butterbean is near weight nowadays. Holla!
