Seth Mitchell, Malignaggi, Mora & Tattoo In Vegas…AVILA

Seth_Mitchell_hand_raised_2010LAS VEGAS-Heavyweight prospect Seth Mitchell won by stoppage in round three on the eve before the big fight in Las Vegas.

Crowds seemed to get larger and larger inside the MGM Grand on Mexican Independence weekend. many of the peole likely lured to the space by the mega fight card that features Floyd Mayweather tangling with the much younger Victor Ortiz on Saturday. The card will be televised on HBO pay-per-view.

Champions gathered young and old at the MGM gambling palace. Fighters like Ken Norton, Ernie Shavers and Sugar Ray Leonard signed autographs and gave their insight on the welterweight world championship fight.

On Friday at the Texas Station Hotel and Casino, Michigan’s rising heavyweight Mitchell (23-0-1, 17 KOs) disposed of Hector Ferreyro (21-11-2) at 2:17 of round three. The first round saw Mitchell pressure the Texan but was unable to land anything flush. By round two the right hands began to connect and though Ferreyro proved game he didn’t pack enough firepower to keep the former Michigan State linebacker from running him over.

Though the arena was not very crowded. a number of boxing celebrities showed up including a trio of defensive wizards, Sergio “Latin Snake” Mora, Paul “Magic Man” Malignaggi and Winky Wright.

Brooklyn’s Malignaggi has a fight coming up on Oct. 15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The former junior welterweight world champ now makes the Wild Card Boxing gym his base of operations and he’s ready for his showdown.
“I’m feeling good and ready to go,” said Malignaggi whose last fight was a decisive win over Jose Miguel Cotto. “Things are going good.”

Malignaggi is one of the more remarkable fighters in the prizefighting world. Though he lacks pure knockout power his defensive skills and granite chin enable him to rack up wins against much harder hitting opponents. He’ll be on the Bernard Hopkins light heavyweight title defense against Chad Dawson.

Next I ran into East L.A.’s Mora who said that 2011 has been the worst year of his career. After losing a disputed decision against Brian Vera in Texas, the former junior middleweight champion was in limbo. But things recently changed.
“It looks like I have a fight against Shibata Flores,” says Mora, who will be fighting at the middleweight level.

Flores has been training with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who fights Alfonso Gomez today at the Staples Center.

Mora hopes some other big things can occur including a match with middleweight world champion Sergio Martinez. If anyone can beat Martinez I’d pin it on Mora whose style can match anything the Argentinian southpaw can fire. Don’t sleep on Mora.

Sitting with Mora was famous radio personality Tattoo, who’s a huge boxing fan and very knowledgeable about the sport. Recently he recorded a conversation with Fernando Vargas that ended with the former world champion punching Tattoo, not once, but twice.

“I was on the ground for 10 minutes,” said Tattoo, who showed photos of his reddened stomach where the Ferocious one slammed his bare fist into the radio personality’s belly. “I couldn’t get up. I couldn’t do anything dude.”

Tattoo’s crazy video is up on under “Tattoo-Fernando Vargas.

“Fernando was laughing at me,” said Tattoo about the after effects of receiving two body blows from the Oxnard bad boy.
Vargas wasn’t bullying. It was Tattoo who thought of testing Vargas punching power.

“I get crazy,” said Tattoo as he described the scenario. “I just yelled **** it.”

Tattoo comes out on MTV3 every Sunday at noon and presents the Top 20 videos. He also comes out on a show on with Tattoo and the Crew.

All three expect a tremendous fight between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz.

“Victor is going to knock him out,” says Tattoo.
