Santa Clara Lauds Robert Guerrero

931Silicon Valley, Calif. – May 25, 2011 – Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors presented Five-Time World Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero with a Proclamation on May 24, 2011 in recognition of his commitment to giving back to the community by raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and being a positive youth role model.

Wasserman commented, “Today, we recognize boxing champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero for serving as a role model for youth and giving back to the community.  Robert is an inspiration to us all and I thank him for coming to receive this Proclamation from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.”

“First thing I want to do is thank God because all this would not be possible without him,” said Guerrero.  “Being a professional athlete, I believe it's my obligation to give back to the community and that's what I'm going to continue to do.  I love boxing and it's my passion, but the most important thing is family and that's why I stepped away to be by my wife when she was ill.  I'm going to bring as much awareness to the bone marrow registry.  People say its tough being a boxer, but its nothing compared to what a cancer patient has to go through.  I want to thank everyone…it truly is an honor to be getting this award.”

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer commended Guerrero stating, “Robert Guerrero exemplifies the true meaning of a professional athlete.  He is an inspiration to people of all ages not only for his accomplishments in the ring, but also outside the ring with his commitment to community outreach.  On behalf of Golden Boy Promotions we want to congratulate Robert and applaud him for giving back to his community and receiving this honor from Santa Clara County.”

[url=] Carl Frampton 2016 Fighter of the Year - For scoring the two biggest wins of his young career, Ierland’s featherweight world champion Carl Frampton has been awarded the 2016 Fighter of the Year. In February of this year, Frampton faced WBA world super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg while defending his own IBF belt at that weight class. The match sold out the Manchester Arena and the rivalry between the two men deserves credit for heightening the attention the lower weight classes were getting in the UK. Frampton edged Quigg in a close fight to unify the belts at 122 pounds. Frampton did not stay at 122 pounds, electing to vacate the titles and move up to the 126 pound featherweight class. He was granted a title shot against undefeated WBA world titlist Leo Santa Cruz at the Barclays Center in NYC. Though he entered the fight in his opponent’s home country as an underdog, Frampton turned the tables in every way. Frampton’s Irish roots saw him draw a huge partisan crowd in NYC and his in-ring savvy saw him control the fight against the respected Santa Cruz. In the end, Frampton walked out with a WBA world title in a second weight class and a second undefeated scalp on his belt. It was a close second for Terence Crawford, who won the 2015 award here at TSS. Crawford went 3-0 this year and he scored the best win of his career in his PPV debut when he defeated highly regarded Viktor Postol by making it look easy. In April Crawford was involved in an incident at an auto body shop that saw Crawford facing criminal charges, and that black eye may have worked against Crawford in the final tally. In the end, for beating two previously undefeated fighters both with over 30 career wins and adding two new world titles in two different weight classes for his trophy case, Belfast’s Carl Frampton is your TSS Fighter of the Year.   Carl Frampton 2016 Fighter of the Year Fans of Frampton and the boxing world won;t have to wait long to see Frampton in another test, as he will be headlining the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for a rematch with Leo Santa Cruz scheduled for January 28th. The fight is set to air on Showtime in the United States and is at the top of a card that features two other world title fights.
