If a window closes another opens and that might be the case for Sugar Shane Mosley.

Golden Boy Promotions says that negotiations between Pomona’s Mosley and Floyd “Money” Mayweather are underway for a possible mega fight on March 13 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. (editors note: new talks are suggesting a May 15 or 22 fight date).

“I just got off the phone,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy. “You know my record for making fights. It used to be 100 percent but now its 98 percent.”

The one that got away was Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather that dissipated, no, flamed out after back and forth talk cut the fight for good more than a week ago. But with the necessary withdrawal of Andre Berto due to family concerns in Haiti, a window opened for Mayweather to fill Mosley’s empty card. Or is that Mosley filling Mayweather’s card?

We will see.

“It would be a tremendous fight,” said Schaefer on Monday who was forced to cancel the entire fight card that was supposed to take place on Jan. 30, in Las Vegas. “Mayweather and Mosley would be one of the two or three best fights of the year without a doubt.”

Mosley hasn’t fought in more than a year and had been training rigorously in Big Bear for the past three months. Then came word on Monday that the fight with WBC welterweight titleholder Berto was off.

“I'm disappointed that the fight has been called off, but I understand that Andre is going through a very difficult time.  My heart goes out to him, his family and the people of Haiti,” stated Mosley.

Mayweather, meanwhile, was looking for a partner to fill the fight card at the MGM Grand on March 13. Numerous opponents were suggested and numerous refused by either the fighter or HBO.

Who can refuse a fight between Mosley and Mayweather?

“I’m working on that,” said Schaefer, adding that he was going to call Mayweather’s people again immediately after we spoke. “It’s an unbelievable match.”

The last time fans saw Mayweather he was dominant over Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez after 12 rounds including a knockdown of the Mexico City prizefighter. That was his first fight in nearly two years.

Mosley’s last fight was a one-sided thrashing of WBA welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito in 2009. The win over Mexico’s Margarito was a shock to many who felt Mosley’s best days were behind. Now the power boxer is back in vogue.

“I love this match,” Schaefer said.

Mayweather and Mosley has been more than 10 years in the making. I remember following Mosley’s win over Willie Wise in Las Vegas, during a post fight victory party, Mayweather walked over to a table where Mosley was signing autographs and boldly said to the Pomona fighter:

“Hey Shane, when you going to fight me,” Mayweather said with dozens of people watching.

“Whenever you sign a contract,” said Mosley.

It’s time to sign the contract.
