Mikkel Kessler unifies WBC and WBA super middleweight titles

Mikkel Kessler (38-0, 29 KOs) retained his WBA/WBC 168-pound super middleweight titles by destroying the German Markus Beyer (34-3-1, 13 KOs) with a third round knockout Saturday at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The first two rounds were feeling out rounds, with Kessler relaying on his jab and Beyer delivering his meaningful shots to the Dane’s body.

Mikkel KesslerIn round three Kessler opened up and put Beyer on the canvas with a one-two combination which he couldn’t shake off. Beyer tried to rise and beat the count but the fight was waved off at 2:58.

Kessler admitted after the fight, "I expected a tougher fight… My right hit at the right time. However, he also hit my liver; there I had to swallow quite a lot."

The 35-year-old three-time former champ Beyer said that he was presently in no condition to comment on his immediate plans for the future except to say, "How it goes from here, I don't know yet exactly."

Promoter Mogens Palle, not at as rule given to superlatives, said, "Mikkel fought almost perfectly. If this fight did not impress HBO, then nothing will. Mikkel did more than dominate. He was a wrecking ball from the opening bell. His right hand was powerful and accurate. Now we will look at all our attractive options."

One of those options is for Kessler to meet unbeaten Welsh super middle middleweight sensation Joe Calzaghe.

"I would be glad to fight Joe under the right financial conditions, Kessler said. “I would go to England or he could come to Denmark. I will beat him in either place. I had said that Floyd Mayweather is boxing's best pound-for-pound and that I am the second best fighter in the sport. I think I demonstrated that to some people here tonight. I will fight anyone who is out there." Read more at the BLOG
