Longtime boxing scribe Jeff Jowett turns up at the most unusual fight venues. He is the first to admit that he’d much rather see a fight in a small hotel ballroom than a glittering casino or even at Madison Square Garden. Having been on the scene since the mid-seventies, he has no shortage of exposure to any of them.

During his 60+ years in the fight game, legendary trainer Angelo Dundee has been involved with five heavyweight champions: Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Ellis, Pinklon Thomas, George Foreman and Adilson Rodrigues. It could be more correct to say four champions, because Rodrigues won the not so prestigious WBF title, but in the eyes of Angelo all titles are the same if they are recognized and the purse is right.

Interesting developments this week with heavyweight Joe Mesi. Today in the Buffalo News TheSweetScience.com's own Tim Graham reports Mesi has been cleared by a Nevada judge to resume his career - on what has been termed elsewhere a legal "technicality". This means Mesi is free to apply to state athletic commissions to resume his career, but by no means is assured of being approved as many concerns still exist about Mesi's health within the game. Mesi still has one fight remaining on his deal with HBO, but concerns of a fighter possibly dying in the ring on live television could discourage HBO from moving forward with Mesi in its stable, says Graham.

In 1977, Everett M. Skeehan published Rocky Marciano: Biography of a First Son, the first full-length and long overdue treatment of the great undefeated heavyweight champ. Rocky has a special place in most fight fans’ hearts, but the author grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, birthplace of the Rock, so that special feeling is magnified a thousandfold.

Next time the fight talk turns to egos, throw in the name Zab “Super” Judah. He belongs up there with the rest of the Brash Crew, guys like Bernard Hopkins, James Toney and “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
