This past Saturday night, I watched the Floyd Mayweather-Phillip N'dou lightweight title fight on HBO. After watching the Juan Manuel Marquez-Derrick Gainer fight, all Mayweather and N'dou had to do was engage in one exchange, and it would seem like "The Thrilla in Manila." And you know what, it almost turned out to be just that. What a terrific fight!

One of the biggest misconceptions in boxing, is the strength versus punching power correlation. Throughout the history of prize fighting, we've seen many examples of it in all weight divisions. Some fighters have possessed neck breaking power, but they were not super strong physically. An example of those type fighters or punchers would be Thomas Hearns and Roger Mayweather. Both Hearns and Mayweather carried one punch KO power, but they were sometimes controlled by their opponent from a physical standpoint.

Johnny Tapia reminds me of a guy who always arrives at the airport five minutes before his flight is due to leave. There’s a certain amount of desperation in the way he acts and talks, as though his time is running short. He has an intensity that makes you think his light will burn out long before he finds his way out of the darkness. He’s like a 4-year-old with a big bag of chocolates, a Wall Street commodities broker on a black-coffee binge.

It's readily apparent that the federal bills we've seen thus far - the Professional Boxer Safety Act, the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, and the proposed Professional Boxing Amendments Act of 2003 - are products of a consistent theme: greedy promoters, and awful, corrupt sanctioning bodies exploiting unsuspecting fighters.
