One of the major complaints on the part of promoters and matchmakers during the normal day-to-day course of putting on boxing shows is that commissions are often somewhat over-officious when it comes to taking the matter of approving or disapproving specific matches into their own hands.

Q: How does a little story all of a sudden become a big story?
For the answer, kindly read on.
When I originally published an installment in the first "Operation Cleanup" book about promoter Chris Webb writing a check to NABA junior middleweight champion Travis Simms that, to put it diplomatically, wasn't quite good, I really didn't expect it to be such a big deal. In fact, didn't intend to follow up on it to any great degree.

The recent proposal on the part of an Atlantic City councilman to name a street after promoter Don King was met with a firestorm of opposition, to the point where it was summarily rejected by the rest of the city council.

The 14th Round
Along the way, I certainly figured that if I was going to cover the subject of boxing reform, it was necessary to address the concept of boxing safety, and the inherent dangers involved when two fighters get into the ring with each other. But more than anything, I want to do it with an educated perspective, relating boxing to other sports. If you do that objectively, as all sports fans should, you'll realize that boxing has a pretty good record in this area, when all functionaries are performing their tasks properly.
